High and Low: Richly Patterned Pillows

7-14-08pillow1.jpg

Lately we've been impressed by the variety of richly patterned pillows available from several hundreds of dollars down to the $20-$50 dollar range. At the expensive end of the spectrum, saturated colors are hand-embroidered in complex patterns. At the low end, fabrics inspired by Suzanis and Indian prints have flooded the market. Click below for a few options from both categories...

The new Fall catalog for Pottery Barn has some really cute linen/cotton and linen/velvet throw pillows at decent prices. The patterns are very vibrant and modern.

Can anyone explain why a pillow would cost $265?

Jooly, it's the same reasons diamonds are so expensive. Because people will pay it.

I worked for a designer once who told me that a pillow wasn't a pillow unless it cost at least $300 dollars.

BTW, while the top are named "Java" the applique work is of the style common to Gujurat, in Western India, which is where they were probably made.

I just picked up a couple of great bright, patterned pillows at Pier 1...for about $20/each. I have only been to Pier1 about 2 times in the last 8 years, but I realized that they have a great array of pillows...and they're organized by color...so easy :)

Jooly, the pillows cost as much as the pretentious idiot who buys it will pay. The same people who buy plastic bags for hundreds of dollars (think vuitton) so everyone knows they can. Egad.
