20080311jk9.jpgThe furniture coming out of this local woodworking studio has strong Mission-style roots but the added flashes of contemporary design are just as graceful.

More photos, commendable green initiatives, and how to plot your own Mission after the jump.

20080311jk6.jpgTo push his shop in a sustainable direction, Master Craftsman and owner Jeff Payne is doing more than using low VOC sealants. One of JK Chicago's lumber suppliers is Horigan Urban Forest Products, a company which salvages "undesirable" hardwood from sources such as storm-felled trees and leftover construction scraps. JK Chicago's sawdust waste is also being recycled into the pottery process by the students at Evanston Art Center.

20080311jk7.jpgThis Ravenswood studio also offers well-priced classes in the Woodworking Academy. Split into two sessions, the workshops teach shop safety, standard equipment use, and "basic woodworking joinery." After completing the workshops, students may be allowed to continue using the studio in independent study (also fairly-priced).
