Dwell Magazine 10.08

091108-dwellopen.jpg The cover of this month's the latest Dwell magazine is graced by the architecture of Jamie Darnell out of Kansas City, Mo. A father of 2, husband and architect, Jamie turned his simple plan for a modern home into a great work of art. Click through the jump to see some of his handiwork inside.

091108-dwell2.jpg This house will be on display in the Kansas City Architect's Home Tour this Sunday. The event is open to the public and the details are to be had here.

091108-dwell3.jpg Just because Jamie and his wife have architecture running through their veins doesn't mean they are exempt from everyday homeowner problems. From Dwell....
After the Darnells secured the loans and came up with the design, construction began. And then, over the course of the next 20 months, life intervened. “We had two kids in the process of building, and both of us were working full time,” Michele explains. “Our mantra became ‘No expectations.'”

091108-dwell1.jpg Construction costs were about $320,000, which works out to $134 per square foot. The idea was to create a small rectangular box that was modest in comparison to some of their neighbors but didn’t look dwarfed by them.

091108-dwell4.jpg At the front of the house, one contiguous living area is illuminated by windows on three sides. They wanted one space where they were able to see everything that was going on. You can read the rest of the article here, although it's a great issue to read cover to cover!

That's over in KCK somewhere... I wonder what the rest of the 'hood this house is in is like? There are some other interesting homes in KCK, too, thanks to KU's Studio 804 program:

One of them went up for sale around the same time I bought my home in Overland Park. I was SERIOUSLY considering buying it, but the limited space (no basement, nowhere to store anything) was a turnoff, as was the neighborhood the program was given to build it.
