I'm with the 1970's statistic.
I'm coming to the realization that 500 sq ft per person should be enough. I've seen these homes where each member of the family could have their own loft apartment when you look at the square footage. Don't they want to hang out with each other at all? That was the benefit of the smaller house, you always knew what everyone else was doing.

The answer is no, they don't. With kids with tvs and computers in every room, not to mention gaming systems and iPods. Laptops for mom and dad, etc. Everyone is plugged in and ignoring each other.
