Green Idea: Recycled Rugs

20070712rug2.jpgOne move toward going green is to use what already exists. We can understand why you wouldn't necessarily want a used rug but what about a recycled one? Here are some options worth retreading:

The Smart Rug (in Oriental Turkish Plum) by Good Common Sense is made from recycled soda bottles! Not only are the designs and colors great, but the rug can live in a dining room or on a back porch. It's easy to clean, reversible, and looks more expensive than it really is. We've seen these rugs around a lot and Good Common Sense has the largest selection yet.

Urban Outfitters weighs in with a woven rug made from recycled bike tires. It only comes in black, of course, but it's a decent size (3'x5') and completely affordable ($28).

This stunning circular floor mat by Inghua Ting (and available at Branch) is made entirely from vintage leather belts! It's rather small (27.5" diameter) and pretty pricey ($648) but it'll certainly get noticed.

For the shag lovers out there, Gaiam introduces the Reclaimed T-Shirt Spaghetti Rug. The large (5'x7') and heavy (40 lbs.) rug is hand-hooked and made from unused t-shirt factory remnants. Unused, in this case, is good because we wouldn't want to have to think about walking around on someone else's pit stains!

As a diehard rug collector (almost every square inch of my floors are covered in Persian rugs, and now I have some hanging on walls and outside my entry way, and more in storage), this purple rug is disgusting to me.

But you got my attention...! ;->

The site does have a decent "Turkish rust" colored one where they even attempted to create abrash (striated fading marks caused by different dye lots, typical in tribal rugs and to a lesser degree some city workshop made rugs). I recently had a Viss rug where the abrash was so beautiful it was incredible.

For $75 I'd be tempted to put this on my patio, so I'm glad you posted the link. Thanks. :->

But it's the only one. The rest are just cheap tacky not-even-close-to-real-rug looking. In my admittedly biased opinion. ;->

I just viewed this site and think the prices are great and the selection is okay. I found a great teal and brown rug that will exactly match my new bedroom decor. I don't think I would use this in a living area because it may look kinda cheap, but in my darkened bedroom it will look just fine.
