Located in River North's high-end furniture district, Manifesto stands out from the area's modernist showrooms. Owners Dick and Barbara Gorman focus on European imports (with many Italian manufacturers that you won't find anywhere else) and custom-made furniture. Inside, you'll see simple, high-quality furnishings in neutral colors with lots of dark wood finishes. The staff is very knowledgeable, and they've been friendly on all our visits.

Furniture is in the thousands, and there are a lot of options for customizing orders. This is one of those spots to buy long-term investment pieces. Some of the manufacturers Manifesto stocks: Armani Home, Flos Lighting, French firm Hugues Chevalier, Italian firm Alias, and Giorgetti. For the full product line, click here.

We love this quote from owner Dick Gorman in the Jan/Feb issue of Chicago Home and Garden: "We're not trendy. We just like good, classic modern design that doesn't distract you with a lot of smoke and mirrors."

The colors in that first picture...it makes me feel like I just stepped into a sepia-toned picture. But I really like it (I just painted my living room very similar colors!)
