Laurie's 'Deco Modern' Living Room
Room for Color - North #13

thumbs up

Name: Laurie
Location: St. Joseph, Michigan
Type of Home: Single Family Home

Color Inspiration: My color style is "color with pops of neutral," probably in response to growning up in houses with all brown/beige decor with pops of harvest gold. I prefer cool, saturated colors.

Give Laurie a THUMBS UP if you think this room belongs in the finals!
Thumbs Up Voting is only activated for 48 Hours — so don't delay!

Deco Modern

Color Inspiration continued: It's hard to find decor with my color choices without having beige, brown, or taupe mixed in. I fell in love with the rug and picked the aqua paint to match. The sofa fabric was the only swatch I liked in a huge display. Do you know how hard it is to find a purple sofa that has a bend/curve in it?!

Colors Used: Sherwin Williams Interesting Aqua and Plummy.

Color Tip: Keep looking for what you love. Don't be afraid to use the colors in the bottom half of the paint color strips.

Gorgeous! I love how the back splash in the kitchen ties the living room color together. I have a deep egg plant area rug in my living room and egg plant accents with buttery yellow walls. Deep purples are exciting and calming at the same time. Love this hope you make it to the finals.

I love the use of those colors in this room. I bet it sets a wonderful mood when you're hanging out in this space. Moving to inspiration board now!

I *DO* know how hard it is to find the right purple sofa. Give it up: where'd you find it?

Thanks for your kind comments. The cabinet is the Linear media cabinet from Room & Board in maple/stainless finish. The front panels are perforated metal and the remotes work with the doors closed. We removed the ugly, flat, colonial builder's special fireplace surround and put in the simple brushed nickel surround. The dresser by my front door is a $20 Salvation Army find that I painted with leftover paint from my LR/DR and kitchen. The pattern was inspired from some Gailbraith & Paul fabric lampshades I saw at Room & Board ("Donuts" pattern). Purple sofa is from Mitchell Gold.

Hooray for eggplant-colored couches! We have one too -- dark purple L-shaped sectional. Your entire room is gorgeous. Are the chair and ottoman also Mitchell Gold?

Love the colour choices and I agree that the rug is a great inspiration. Not caring for how the pale wood looks with all the rich deep colours but the whole room is just so inviting while still be stylish and pulled together.

My previous post was deleted. Oh well love this room and the way the kitchen back splash ties in with the color. Beautiful!

Rich and elegant room, eggplant makes me feel great too. I love all the wall colors, the kitchen tiles, the lamps, the jewel tones!

Ladies and Gents, let's give Laurie a round of applause! I finally found a room that I love and it is not my style.

Laurie, you did a wonderful job of defining the different spaces of your home all while making it feel like a cohesive design. I only hope that I can accomplish the same as well in my place as you have done in yours.

i really like the purple couch, and the green in the next room looks like it's probably more interesting than the blue in the living room.

i appreciate your comments on my entry, however i dont think "anyone should" say what anyone else "should" display or consider art.

ok, I agree that the room is well-arranged and that (while I am generally not a fan of purple) the colors are harmonious, but am I the only one that finds this room a little bit dull? It looks like the sort of cold, brand-new, contrived setup you'd find in a developer's model home. I'm sorry for posting something so negative, I just feel like it needs a little more personality - some more artwork or interesting lighting? Less birch veneer?

to tymore: I appreciate your input. Not sure I understand it completely though. Builders in my area, and I'm not that far from you, look like they're trying to emulate Pottery Barn, which is not at all what I have. I prefer cleaner lines and putting stuff inside cabinets and drawers so the room doesn't look cluttered. Many of the accessories are things I've had for awhile, such as the brain coral that I got on vacation in 1978, and the format camera I've had and used for at least 20 years. Also, there is NO birch veneer here. It's solid maple.

tmoore, I totally agree.
i realize these are actually well-made expensive pieces of furniture, but the whole look comes off as an ikea display, or even a show home that nobody actually lives in.
well appointed, well executed, but lifeless.

I think this is very elegant and restful which a living room should be. The cool colors are not what everyone loves but man, are they used well here. The wall color is dead on perfect for the couch to harmonize. The whole room is neat and clean while still looking liveable. I like it!

PURPLE/EGGPLANT is my FAVE color, I have it everywhere in my house, it makes me happy! Whenever I try to do a room in a different color it never works right, I have accent colors, orange, teal, lime green but purple is the main color. Great job on this room, it is elegant and sophisticated from floor to ceiling. I would die for the chair, ottoman and sofa! I am so jealous!
