Look!: DIY End Tables Via West Elm

091008-westelmcardboard.jpg Sometimes it's nice to go look around at stores, even if you don't plan on buying anything. Not to see what you can or can't afford, but to pick up design ideas based on merchandising techniques. Plus it helps to curb impulse buying (but we wouldn't know anything about that). Click through the jump to hear our thoughts on this simple display from West Elm.

West Elm used these stacks of cardboard next to the bed they had on display. The stacks weren't meant to showcase anything, nothing sat upon them, they were merely to create texture and a solid block of color to the eye while you were shopping in the area.
We think this is a great idea for an impromptu side table or room divider; be it in the bedroom, the living room, or a corner of your home office they would work nicely in most any space.
The nature of them allows you to configure them to your own liking. Change the height, thickness of cardboard, number of stacks... even the colors if you wish.
So keep your eyes peeled on your local Craigslist for spare boxes, or partner with a retail establishment to bring home some of their typically throw-away boxes and see what designs you can make! The post office also has boxes meant for shipping that they deliver to your door to free. Just make sure *cough* that you're using them for *cough* mailing things.

I SAW that! I LOVED it! It's a block of corrugated cardboard. Don't like the idea of Fed Ex boxes (sorry) but love the corrugated cardboard idea. But where would you locate blocks of corrugated cardboard?? It could be a very labor intensive DIY project....

amiencc- I had meant to say that you could keep the Fed Ex boxes flat and then stack them all up to give the same look, so they are just a cheap *cough free* source of cardboard. You can even turn them inside out so the white exterior doesn't show!
