apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Modern Rustic Farmhouses

The "modern rustic" look is a major trend in decor this year. At Apartment Therapy, we've noticed it in furniture collections, interiors, and the general zeitgeist that's followed on the heels of economic upheaval. It's a back-to-basics look that fits in well with the classic American farmhouse aesthetic...

"Modern rustic" usually means natural materials, lots of wood, neutral colors, and simple forms. It combines the handmade quality of earlier American decor (like Shaker furniture or Colonial ladderback chairs) with the clean lines and airy interiors of mid-century modernism.

We've rounded up a few examples of farmhouses we see as good representations of the aesthetic. Click through the links for more information on each home.
