Roundup: "Real" Bathrooms

With all eyes on the bathroom this month, it's easy to get swept up in the high end displays shown in magazines and product photos from different companies. There's nothing wrong with this short lived fairy tale, however, such bathrooms are usually staged instead of really lived in. In defiance of such photos, we rounded up a few of our favorite bathrooms from past house tours. Click through the jump to see where real people uh... do their business? And we're not talking home offices.

Gosh, what a beautiful curtain in the bathroom photo.

... Now I want to get my hands on a giant white vinyl curtain and make my own...

I agree that the curtain is amazing, but I would have put it somewhere else, because it is REALLY close to the toilet. In fact, it looks like it is actually touching the toilet seat. So all I can imagine is that it touches the seat, absorbs the splash from the flush, then rests again my back/side/thigh when I sit down? Ew.

Only a few of those I'd consider real bathrooms...not sure what the OP meant by real though.

I'm grossed out by the first photo - that lace would get so disgusting in a bathroom unless it was washed daily.

What is going on with the toilet & curtain in that top pic? Is the curtain supposed to be hiding the toilet? I can't figure it out.

That "lace" curtain is tyvek (think of the stuff they wrap houses in before putting on the siding, only all white.)
It's a Tord Boontje panel:

While I don't know that I'd want any curtain close enough to touch me while using the toilet, I also think it's no big problem from the sanitation standpoint unless you are prone to explosive diarrhea or something! And with tyvek, if you really wanted to, you could mist it with a spray of Lysol or something now and then...

(I have this panel in my bedroom window, backed with a sheer panel for more privacy -- I love it and so do my cats!)

I can't believe I missed Patrick's World of Wonder house tour. That's my favorite bathroom by far, and his whole place is full of cool stuff.

I believe that the Tord Boontje panel in the first photo is being used instead of an actual bathroom door. Love the panel and bathroom, not sure about the lack of privacy there though.

I do think that the lace would be a problem to keep clean and I'd hate it always being in my face in such a tight spot.

I'm not so concerned about the "splashing", but the grime and lint that tends to collect on surfaces in bathrooms. Hairspray fuzz lint...eh, not good. And such a detailed surface, seems like it'd be a pain.
