A lot (not all) of CB2 does kind of look like dorm furniture.

I failed miserably at living a normal life with white furniture. Ne plus jamais!

I have to agree with Little Rock. It's so poorly made. CB2 is not much more than plain ol' crappy mass produced stuff predominantly made in China. Their catalogs look good, but when you see the stuff in person, it just looks so cheap and junky.

My experience with CB2 is mid-level quality. I try to avoid anything made of particle board from any company. I do have a steel coffee table that I bought from CB2 about 3 years ago that is very sturdy. It is a bit low in height since I recently bought a new sofa, but I have no complaints regarding the quality. CB2 is also a nice place to find small accessories like dishes or vases. I agree that some of those prices do seem slightly high though.

BB: way to go on increasing the level of xenophobia. Cheap stuff manufactured anywhere is likely to be of poor quality.

I got hammered last week for recommending some Walmart furniture as a cheap alternative....to buying CB2, West Elm and so forth...it's all cheap crap made in China but for some reason people think that if it comes from these trendy stores it's high quality. your better off getting your stuff from craigslist or an estate sale. half this stuff isn't even made of REAL WOOD. Do all these eccentric hipster's that post here think buying this sorta crap is eco friendly? but i get stoned for recommending the same object from walmart for a cheaper price?

PREACH !! lil Rock

With Ikea you know what your getting and a better price.
I get things from estate sales or I design it and have it made for the same price or cheaper than such places.

I bought a Ent center from Bo Concept for $900 I scratched the crappy laminate wood moving now I have a $900 peace of garbage. Can't sand & refinish that thin laminate stuff

If ur gonna spend the money....... design it urself & find a good craftsmen to build it. It will mean more to you & last forever

I agree w/ BB on this one - Crap is Crap no matter where it comes from...

...but given a choice I'd rather spend my dollars on US-made Crap than Chinese-made Crap Welfare for folks who don't have jobs anymore because China/Mexico/India/Bangladesh/etc. has cheaper Crap-making labor costs.

However since we're not going to change where CB2 gets its Crap, a better choice for those with limited $$$ is to scour Craigslist, Salvation Army, eBay, etc. for solid vintage pieces to refinish/reuse/repurpose - At least that way our money stays in the US and the pieces themselves will probably be more durable.

All this hating on CB2 - what's up with that?

I finally got a chance to wander through one of their stores a couple of weeks ago, and the price point seems totally in line with what I saw. A store like CB2 is all about less expensive interpretations of far more expensive items and looks. No one will confuse the wood pieces with the Ligne Roset or B&B Italia pieces that inspired them, but the CB2 pieces cost 1/10th of what those higher end pieces cost, so I wouldn't expect them to be of the same caliber. I, for one, love having more choices and resources from which to search for the perfect item, especially when those resources exhibit some style, taste, and are priced with modest budgets in mind.

I probably wouldn't buy a sofa or casegoods from CB2 (or Ikea or Target for that matter), but I think the accessories are generally terrific and a real bargain.

And theloftlife, Bo Concept really seems to be nothing but pricey trouble. I am not surprised you had a less than stellar experience with their goods. And their price point is twice that of CB2 (at least).

Eh.. the hating is deserved. First off CB2 chases and knock's off most of their stuff from DWR - and they're not even coy about it.

Second their stuff is overpriced and undermade. If I'm going to get a coffee table it had damn well better be wood, or have a plastic laminate on it for those sweating glasses of iced tea. Instead I get the Lunar coffee table which features "High gloss white on a wood composite surface" Thats WHITE PAINT on PARTICLE BOARD. That isn't even trying to be a durable surface. It's lazy and cheap - which is what I've found most CB2 products to be.
