Right now I'm using a good-looking card table with a rich reddish finish and a faux-leather insert top that I got for $40 at Walmart. Gets the job done cheaply and looks good doin' it!

Just yesterday I took the metal legs from a marble topped garden table my husband made a table top from a piece of scrap wood. I painted it white and it fits exactly the space where we want to put the laptop. Most desks I looked at were too wide.

I use a white Vika desk from IKEA.

It was easy to put together, very light if you like to move stuff around and only $35. I know it doesn't have drawers, but drawers just collect stuff I don't really need. I do have a filing cabinet, that holds files and supplies nearby.

Is it sad I can spend five minutes and find better deals?

...I beleive Sarah was going for pieces that at least have a semblance of style and good design.

I really hate to break this to you, bepsf, but one of the pieces above is from Walmart. And you are one sad person who thinks just because something comes from Target, Walmart, etc that it is just disposable stuff.

To be honest, anyone who visits my home loves the chair I got at Target for $80. And it looks EXACTLY like the poang chair from Ikea. In my opinion, that is just overpriced furniture - I haven't seen anything from there that hasn't broken while my "cheap and disposable" (as you put it) has held up.

as in the case of ikea, there are bad things and good things at walmart & target. some of the cheaper stuff is disposable because it simply doesn't last. the original post is looking for solid desks that won't disintegrate after 1 yr.

Timmy Jr -- I bought a lot of my furniture at Walmart - I personally like the friendly prices, but whatever. I've had some of the furniture for YEARS. Unless you plan to jump on it, throw things at it, put something on it heavier than you, than it tends to be decent furniture. But I doubt you would do that on anything you just had to shell out $200 for.
