We think a good rug is hard to find; one that suits you in texture, color and design. Since giving up active searching, we just stumbled upon this one on Craigslist (even though we had committed to the idea of finding a "new rug," not a "slightly used" one.)
Even so, we just purchased our largest (8 x 10!), nicest, hottest rug yet. At three-months old and barely used, we knew this West Elm "Links" rug in chocolate brown and beige was the one.
We're curious about your best Craigslist finds, if you've scored anything from our scavenging here on Apartment Therapy, and what you'd like to see us scavenge more of for you. Please tell us!
Our Craigslist experience this time around? We had the most pleasant buyer/seller exchange, it was in perfect condition when we went to check it out, and after a few days at home it is shedding a lot (initially driving us bonkers, but then we remembered that NEW or barely used rugs shed. So, we got a new rug after all!).

Beautiful rug! I'm curious how much the seller marked the rug down, since it was only 3 months old. Do you mind saying? In general: how much of a discount do people expect to get from an item that's "almost new" or "lightly used"?
Leslie and I bought the DWR chair that you featured about a month ago. We love it! Here's a link to it in our space:

All of my craigslist scores have been great and the sellers have been fantastic. I got a beautiful art deco dresser with mirror for $100. 2 Wassily chairs (although I'm pretty sure they are copies) and a fantastic table for $300.
I'm currently on the hunt for a vintage dresser and a buffet, something mid-century-ish.
A friend of mine scored an awesome mid-century telephone table that was scavanged by apartment therapy. She loves it and the seller was so nice, he delivered it for free!
Keep on scavaging for us!
Great rug by the way.
While it's not something you're likely to find everyday on Craigslist, Della Robbia makes great rugs (colorful and extremely durable) and even offers customers to chance to change colors in set patterns or design their own patterns from scratch.
As expected with that kind of customization, these rugs can run into the 4,000 dollar range, but some of their stocked pattern rugs are reasonably priced and even available in smaller, apartment-friendly sizes.
Needless to say, if you ever find one on Craigslist, it'd be worth posting.
I got a gorgeous balck and white cowskin on Criags NYC form a totally sweet, totally hot guy in the East Village. A totally pleasant, totally painless experience. I had to schlep down to see it, but he graciously home delivered the rug to my house when the check cleared.
A stark contrast to my attempts to SELL On CL, where people seem to expect things for pennies on the dollar of *used* prices, and where one buyer totally renegged AFTER I had brought the table from storage into the city for heer to pick up.
yikes, spell meltdown..."black","Craigs" and "her". Time for lunch, I guess!
sfduchamp, per your pictures, that DWR chair is perfect in your space! I also love your IKEA ottoman makeover (and your Emeco chairs, and your brick wall, and Leslie's art, and your view...)
I love Craigslist, it is one of my very favorite things. That is why it is so disappointing to have negative selling experiences. I have sold many things on Craigslist. Sometimes the buyers are great. The worst though is when they make an appointment to view an item and then don't ever show up or call. I don't care if you change your mind on an item, we all have second thoughts sometimes, but they should at least call or e-mail and say "I'm not interested in your item anymore" so that I don't sit around here waiting on somebody who isn't going to show. If I am relaxing at home, I might want to drink alcohol or not wear pants, and if somebody is coming to look at furniture I am going to be sober or at the very least fully dressed. Being stood up by potential buyers is a lifestyle infringement. Rant over.
I bought the stainless steel desk A.T. Chicago featured on June 30th. Thus far, I have been happy with it.
Thanks A.T. Chicago!
>D<
Ha Ha Southie....drinking alcohol and not wear pants is my after work ritual these days.
I bought my Prouve lamp that was highlighted a couple days ago here on AT. It was brand new, in the box & delivered to my door for $675. At the time I was a bit horrified paying that much money for a light but now that I see it's being sold at DWR for $1150 (plus tax, delivery, etc) I feel like a freakin' superstar. I also bought a nifty green leather desk chair on wheels for $25 that I just love .
A set of four barely used Eames Eiffel chairs in white for $400! The person (a very cute male) who sold them to me was being relocated to the UK and needed to sell all of his fabulous furniture. The chairs were maybe two months old at most. I love them.
sfduchamp, wow, so many things i am inspired by in your apartment. can you tell me about that artwork (the beautiful birds in particular) on your walls? it's incredible.
sfduchamp: Love your place! Thanks for posting the link to your Flickr page.
sfduchamp, I love your place! That teak buffet is divine, and I love that you put so many pieces on an angle. I am currently trying to be less of a linear nerd and work with angles and round furniture. So far there's just the one round kitchen table, but I'm trying! Perhaps there are matching vintage round coffee tables in my future (they certainly are in my dreams!).
i do rather enjoy my $25 yellow chair and the $20 ikea sofa/futon thing you can kind of see in the pic next to it.
my free hallway table wasn't bad either.
(sorry i don't have the hundreds to drop into the super fancy stuff! haha.)
hi sara,
generally it seems that things are priced higher than i can understand on CL (but i think that's my garage sale mentality seeping in; CL is an entirely different economy, really). This is the first thing i've ever purchased this way, so my experience of markdowns on new or slightly used items only comes from scavenging for AT. Brand new (sold online only, i believe) my West Elm goes for $599 plus tax and shipping. I bought it for $280 and made sure that i could see the item before purchasing (this is common practice for CL, i'm sure). when i saw the rug, it looked in better condition than i could have imagined...literally brand new.
hope that helps, sara.
what do other people expect to pay for new items? 50% of original?
new items ON CRAIGSLIST, i mean...
We recently got this table, plus four matching chairs, for $800. http://www.jensen-lewis.com/product.php?pid=00000307
They told us they bought the set at Plunkett and two weeks ago it was still on the Plunkett site for somewhere in the 1400+ range. Although they've had the set for two or three years, it looked absolutely brand new. European Furniture Warehouse also carries it, so we were able to look at it and similar models before we drove out to look at the one on Craigslist. The bottom line is that even if we bought a floor sample on sale from EFW, it would cost us at least 1300 by the time we added even the cheapest chairs. So we were happy to pay $800.
Craigslist is definitely not a garage sale. It's really an entirely new way for local buyers and sellers to find each other. As someone who has recently downsized I've sold more than I've bought on Craigslist. My favorite was the sale of a 30 year old double mummy down sleeping bag. It went for $20--at least 10 times what I would have gotten in a garage sale, I'm sure--to a secret service agent with very wide shoulders! He was happy. I was happy. Only on Craigslist.
