They still just seem too expensive to me. I'm going to be one of those people who's stuck with making trivets from their samples...

I am with you, CaseyB. I love the idea, and I think they are great-looking... But they are still way too expensive.

I love, love, love my FLOR carpet tiles! I use them in two different rooms in my house. I made an area rug for my living room with Toy Poodle and a runner for my kitchen in the Martha Stewart line.

One thing I have learned about the FLOR tiles is to pay attention to which types are good for heavy, medium, and light floor traffic. The Toy Poodle has been good for my light traffic area but it is a little more difficult to clean. It also has beveled edge and sometimes cat hair settles in between the tiles.

The Martha Stewart Laurel Needlepoint Stripe is great for the high traffic kitchen because it is smoother and dries really quickly when washed. I dropped a whole carton of eggs on the carpet and it came completely clean after a quick wash in the sink. Being able to clean them in the sink is a great plus for apartment dwellers.

I'll never go back to regular area rugs again. I think they should hire me to do promotion:)

But at a mere $5.57 a square foot, you can create an 8x5' area rug for roughly $225 (minus shipping, of course). It's hard to come by a decent "traditional" rug for that price. Just pull up a tile and FLOR is easy to clean -- the old standby rug is NOT. It's green, it's recyclable, it's trimmable to fit your whims and comes in about a zillion colors and patterns. What's not to love? Granted, I have FLOR tiles and I'm a convert.

I admit I just don't get it. These are popping up EVERYWHERE and to me, they have the look of cheap office carpet. The easy cleaning is really the only benefit I see. I think this is a fad that will be "sooo 200x" a few years from now.

A few years ago I went with Flor tiles because it was a much cheaper option for my home office than a traditional rug. I wanted a clean and modern look and the Housepet tiles I put down are still in excellent shape and dog hair doesn't cling to them as much as a wool rug. Not to mention when my dog tossed her cookies in my office, I just picked up the tile, hosed it off outside and put it back when it dried. Try that with wool.

Thirding the too expensive comments... As much as I like the designs and the washability, I can still get a nice 8x10 wool rug at Homegoods for much less $ than the equivalent in synthetic Flor tiles.

i love the idea behind flor, but are there any retailers that carry flor besides cb2 (so limited)? the online flor stor is lovely, but i really want to play with them in-person.

We got a bunch of flor tiles, some matching and some not, for only $1 each a couple of years ago when Storehouse went out of business. I like them, but definitely wouldn't pay $10 each for them.

We got two large, all-wool rugs at Ikea from the as-is area for only $100 each, so there are definitely better bargains to be had.

I have the flor tiles. I love how easy they are to clean and rearrange in terms of shape and size for when I change up the furniture configuration. I have the walking on clouds tiles and they are genuinely soft and plush, unlike some of the other styles.

I have a roomful of Flor tiles (Solid Ground, in a few different colors). It's nice, although the pile of mine is very low, so it does have a bit of that "office carpet" feel mentioned above. I agree that it's rather expensive for what it is, i.e. decent but not necessarily excellent-quality carpet stuck on vinyl tiles. It can be convenient for cleaning and rearranging. And I think it definitely has more shelf-life than old-style wall-to-wall carpet, since it's easier to move, and it doesn't seem to get as nasty as carpet can. I wouldn't get too excited about how "green" it is. I think it's great that Flor has worked hard on recycling, and I understand their tiles don't contain much VOCs. So it's "green" compared to many other nylon/vinyl products. But one can get great deals on wool carpets and rugs, and many of these will be as "green" or greener.

Flor is not cheap. Add in shipping and its a bit of sticker shock. I purchased my Flor (Toy Poodle) almost a year ago and have been very pleased so far. I went wall to wall - so, yikes! It was not the cheapest alternative, but my apartment will leak from time to time, and the flor allowed me to replace or clean sections without having to worry about total replacement or moldy damp padding underneath the carpet. It worked for me, but if you are just purchasing for aesthetic reasons, definitely investigate proper carpeting. Even with installation, you can get a higher quality carpet than Flor for the same price or less.

I agonized about getting FLOR. Seemed expensive but I thought it would work great in my apartment. I hated the fact that when you move apartments the perfect rug for the last apartment doesnt work in the new one. I ordered samples but I still didnt buy.

Luckily I had a business trip to Atlanta and I was able to go to the showroom. Once seeing them in person it seemed worth it. But it was so important seeing all the samples in person. Some of the ones I thought I would like I didnt because the pile, texture or color was off. I mean I was in the showroom with my shoes off! I loved Coir, Counting Sheep but they were way too expensive. Wide Wale and Passage Way werent bad but I was only willing to pay $10 per tile. Ones I didnt like were Straight and Narrow, Housepet, Home Movies, Morning Coffee.

So I took the plunge and purchased Checkered Past and Twill Ride in Vanilla/Hazelnut a tannish-cream color for my living room. A close second was Finer Things. Both of these tiles had a deeper springier pile that felt good on my feet. Also these are good for medium traffic areas. I second whoever said to pay attention to ratings on the website and catalog. I am really happy I bought FLOR last August. I made a 9 by 11 rug for less than $400 with shipping included. Just last week I spilled some concord grape juice on the rug and it wasnt a problem to clean up.

I am thinking about FLOR for my bathroom. Has anyone done that? My tiny bathroom has super gross tile and grout that I want to cover up.

Check over at Lowe's too, they have different patterns than the rest of the FLOR offerings and they are ONLY at Lowe's. But they are not shown online at this current time...I did prefer the ones at Lowe's, as far as the designs, than the usual offerings.

FLOR UK has many designs not available here:

You can buy some FLOR tiles NOW. And you can buy some FLOR tiles later. You can buy just ONE of a design or color or pattern, sometimes, and others come in a set.

Any other rug you buy, you can't swap out pieces. You get one pattern, all the time.

FLOR means you could buy a mix, and add or swap out various tiles to change the look. You could buy a button set of four, and use the curved parts at the corners of one you made as an area rug for a different shape.

Or do the scalloped border, shown also on this site:
http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/look/look-customized-flor-carpet-tiles-by-todd-oldham-051981

The scallops would be larger, of course, using the Button rug parts.

The squares being all the same size, means you can buy them from different sources. When Office Max has a sale or Lowe's or FLOR.

Careful shopping can save a lot. Like the deals at Overstock. Or the "free shipping with minimum purchase" at Target. Yet they can still be mixed with the more expensive carpet tiles from FLOR.

And, one more bonus...if you happen to be a member of AAA or CSAA, you can get an additional 10% discount by shopping online at:
www.aaa.com/target

Text from membership page:

It's only online, not in stores.

FLOR is about the only thing I would CHOOSE to have. Simply because the cat yaks up hairballs. Often tuna-scented. I cannot pull up my wall to wall to wash it in the sink. With FLOR, I could.

Unfortunately, the landlords buy the cheapest carpet known to mankind, and wouldn't spring for FLOR for the apartments. Seems to me it would save money in the long run, if the tiles could be washed and reused. And it would also allow new tenants to pick out their own tiles to put down in the middle of the living or dining area and pull up neutrals.

Short of buying it for you, which I won't do, I can't be much more enthusiastic about FLOR than I have been for many years.

We bought two boxes of cute striped Flor tiles on sale at Target. They look great in our hallway, which is a relatively low-traffic area. We have a wire-haired dog, however, and her stray hairs seemed to weld themselves to the Flor tiles. Nothing I tried would separate hair from tile. I took this as the last in a long list of reasons to buy the Dyson Animal, which sucked even the most inconspicuous dog hairs up from the tiles.

This did, however, completely destroy the whole point of buying Flor tiles on sale in the first place.

I just purchased some FLOR tiles to make an area rug and I LOVE them!!!! They are really easy to put down and they stay in place - i have not even needed to use the adhesive dots, although they are on cork flooring, so maybe that helps.

One of the best things is that are not extremely plush, so there is not tripping over the edge of the rug.

I bought mine at cb2, which does not have a huge selection, but the salesguy helped make a pattern I liked. Plus, no shipping charge. I just ordered some online and thought the shipping was kind of high. It was a tax free transaction, though, which helps offset that charge some.
