Christkindlmarket Chicago 2006

112706market.jpgYesterday was our first visit ever to the annual Christkindlmarket in Daley plaza. A true German market, and the largest holiday market in the US, you'll find everything from handcrafted ornaments to roasted nuts to glass and ceramic steins (and a lot of non-German stuff in between). We happily grabbed a brat with sauerkraut ($5.50) and spiced wine served in a ceramic holiday boot ($7) before checking out all the stuff for sale. Surprisingly, the crowds weren't so bad, which makes us think we might actually make it back before Christmas Eve, the market's last day.

The market is free and open to all during these hours:

November 24 to December 23
Mondays - Thursdays 11 am to 8 pm
Friday-Saturday 11 am to 9 pm
Sunday 11 am to 8pm

Christmas Eve, December 24, 11 am to 4 pm - only

The spiced wine is waaay to sticky and I've always found the schnitzel to be underwhelming.

I go to Christkindlmarket every year, and focus on three things.
1. Getting a Brat with the works. 2. Going to the glass ornament hut where you can get these amazing oranaments in unique shapes like hamburgers, snowy owls, pickles, Mushrooms etc. (they're reasonably priced..perfect for those awlful secret santa co-worker gifts. and of course the 3. The Candy Hut...where you can get incredible chocolate from overseas and KINDEREGGS! I buy them for my family every year.
