Before it was a popular film, Mr. Blandings was a radio play, and it's being performed tonight in that format at the Cultural Center.

In the '30s and '40s, Lux Flakes --"safe for your delicate hose and undies"-- were sold in huge quantities, thanks, in part, to its sponsorship, on CBS, of The Lux Radio Theater, one of the longest running and most listened to radio shows in the history of American broadcasting. Of the more than one thousand movies adapted for that program, a stand out was "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House", starring Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. It's the story of an upwardly mobile middle-aged couple who decide to make the move away from NYC and their tiny, crammed apartment.

I'm an architect and my boss insists that everyone in the office see the movie. He buys copies of it to give to our house clients. It's hilarious and far, far too real....
