At Grand and Ashland, two 3' tall plants are for sale (seller doesn't know the type but says they're easy to care for). We've been known to buy plants from CL - a great way to rescue what might get sent to the curb. $30 each or $50 for the pair.

ZZ plants. You can tell if you look at the root system -- tuber. Also, leaves are very shiny.

They are definitely ZZ plants -- slow growers, but they are VERY VERY easy to take care of & don't require much light (I have three ... they are the only plants I can keep alive!)

I have one of these plants. It seems to be unkillable. I've had it for about 5 years and it's thriving. I think I've heard it chuckling quietly at my other plants as they slowly die.

zz's are beautiful plants. i received one for my birthday almost three years ago. it's been happy wherever i've placed it in my home. because of the tuber root system, they require very little watering (bonus).
