I have a similar fan, circa 1940. It is extremely heavy, oscillates, and makes almost no noise. I love it.

Definitely NOT child-safe though. In fact, I stuck my own fingers in at the top one time, when I reached to move it and my attention strayed. Ouch.

I have a fan like that too. It worked until a little while ago. Now it shorts when I plug it in - a pretty scary experience. Anyone have any suggestions on where I could get it fixed?

Ortheegg---small appliance repair shop, or lamp shop would be a good place to start.
