apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Prince Aha Stool by Philippe Starck

7-18-07princeahastool.jpg

This month, we've been rethinking the way we use resources, including space. Space is always valuable, always limited and we're constantly searching for ways to make the most of it. Flexible furniture like Philippe Starck's Prince Aha Stool ($87 at Design Within Reach) is one way to maximize space. It's usable inside or outdoors as a side table or stool, and the inside opens up for storage.

We love hard-working furniture that can adapt as our apartments (and lives) change.

Any other suggestions for flexible, space-saving furniture?

My husband and I have 2 Prince Aha stools in grey. We use them as side tables, stools, and to store cords and cables for our electronics. We have also opened them up and filled them with ice, beer, and wine for parties. They are probally one of our most functional pieces. I think you've hit the nail on the head with Prince Aha. Not many pieces are as versatile!

Room and Board's Prism Tables. It does double duty in our family room by keeping a clutter-free table top while storing magazines, books, remotes on it's lower shelf. I found it quite a challenge to find a slim-lined coffee table that also had storage, this was a great solution! http://tinyurl.com/36uw6d

My second favorite the Lord Yo chair, also by Philippe Starck. Great outdoors, slipcover it and bring indoors. Stackable.

Prince ahas are the best!
We have one at the shower, so maria has a place to rest her foot while shaving. Now all the bath products squeegee fits neatly inside!

we have three in our backyard that usually serve as side tables, but they also work as seating when my nieces and nephews are over for a bbq.

i love joel's use of them in the shower! i never even considered that ... until now.

Also, be aware than, when using it as an ice container, the water can drain from the top to the bottom section and the lid (at the bottom) is the only thing preventing a leak. So be careful when placing it on wood floors.

Joel - Genius! total genius.

I have banished squeegee's from our shower because they end up getting moldy, but this seems to be a great solution that I just might have to implement!

Does anyone know if Chiasso's Sally stool ($65) is the same thing or a knock-off?

Thanks joel. I would much rather own the real deal! I love your bathroom remodel, btw. Did you use glass tiles?

Just to clarify, I take the stools outside before filling them with ice and beer. As the ice melts, the stools fill with water...I wouldn't recommend placing them anywhere near wood floors.

Don't forget the Primary Pouf. It is more money, however, it can be very functional. I use two in my apartment as an end table, desk seating, seating for guests together they can be a coffee table and even a bench press.

Also, not to be cheap, but it seems there would be a pouf knock off that can be made of the same material. Does anyone know of one?

Dave
FYI - I got mine at a DWR oulet for $80 something per in Chicago. Please bring back a warehouse sale to Chicago. Kentucky is a bit of a drive.

Hi Meg! Yes we used Bizzaza glass tile. it was a pain to cut little strips but overall is worth it.
mviamontes, exactly my thoughts!
art.... I can't get enough of royksopp!!!!!

The good thing about primary Pouf is that you can place them outside and the color won't fade and the metal wont rust.... The only problem is price. You really need at least 2 or 3 and that will bring the price to almost $1k!
