Look!: Unexpected Chair Detail

20080707orchard1.jpgCheck out the schoolhouse style of this chair. We like the wood even though it's fairly worn out and beaten up. We love the metal brads, lined up in an arrow formation as if to say, "Take a seat."

But there wasn't just one of these chairs. We found a whole crowd of them in the most uninspiring of places...

20080707orchard2.jpgAstonishingly, we found these fashionably vintage chairs in the food court of the Westfield Old Orchard mall. Now it's easy to understand why they're not in the best shape. The food court sees a lot of sitting action.

The mall could have gone the easy route with easy-to-wipe-clean plastic chairs. That would have been so generic and expected.

Yet, just as the brads are a nice surprise, the natural look of wood contrasts well against all the neon lighting and bright restaurant colors.

We're certain this design choice made our fries taste better.

Huh, pretty sure those are vintage, they used to be terribly worried about 501 rivets scratching the wood back there in the rump-pocket area..

Go to the Gap there at Old Orchard and check out the fitting rooms. Eames DCM knock-offs! I went so far as to ask the manager where they got them, and he mumbled something about a furniture warehouse in california...

Urban Dictionary: ass groove
A depression in the cushion of a couch or chair formed by many hours of sitting. First known usage by Homer Simpson. Don't sit in my ass groove!

I once got a dozen very similar chairs from the old Nordstrom that closed at Stanford Shopping Center, back in the 90s. They didn't have the seat-bumps, as they were used in the sewing room. Alterations ladies sat in them to run sewing machines.

Sold them as a dining set with history.
