Budget Chair Faceoff: Target vs. Ikea

ikeavstarget070908.jpgTwo very similar chairs - both slipper style, with wooden legs and modern floral upholstery. One is $40 cheaper, but the other has a removable cover. Which do you think is the better budget buy? Jump below for voting, links and prices:

Target Floral Upholstered Chair - with cotton upholstery for $259.99
vs.
Ikea Stockholm Easy Chair - with removable, dry cleanable cover for $299.

Neither. Buy one used and make a cover.

style-wise, the ikea is cleaner and more sophisticated and this is based on appearance alone. I have been tossing these two chairs back and forth in my own head for an apartment setting. has anyone sat in them? can you tell me how comfy it is? thanx.

I have sat in the IKEA chair and it is comfortable. I also prefer the lighter and more refined wooded legs on the IKEA model.

I think the Ikea has better bones, though it's hard to really say without seeing in person.

I like the Target one more. Especially since the IKEA slipcover can only be dry cleaned.

Ah, but you can buy replacement covers for the IKEA one, sparkle:

I like the Target print better. If I had to choose one, I'd probably get the IKEA one, buy some fabric that I like and have a pattern to make a new slipcover.

I can't make a judgement having not seen or sat in either one in person.

vjm, I'm with you. Buy a used or vinatge chair and make a slip cover.

Is the target chair as low to the ground as the ikea chair? I thought the ikea chair was adorable until I saw it in person. It's like a chair for little people or something!

But you can also MAKE replacement covers for either one, TRUE BLUE.
And in the end, the Target one is still cheaper. And I personally like the fabric and the legs on that one more, but that's just a preference of mine.

The fabric on the Target version is more appealing, I liked the Ikea one until I sat in it. Oddly shaped, and really hard for an upholstered chair.

i have the ikea one! in the brighter green leaf pattern. i really like the shape. i think it's very comfortable, but it is very firm so that suits me. i got it in the as-is section 50% off because it had a small ding on the back leg (nothing i wouldn't do on my own!) so it was a pretty good deal for me. this is from their stockholm collection which is supposed to be on the higher end, so i do think it has good construction (has held up well for me). i haven't seen the target one in person.

I also prefer the ikea one. But I'm much too tall for it. It would just be a sad sight.

I voted for the Ikea chair but they are both too pricey, really. But a cool chair in a thrift store and sew a slip cover--or have a generous friend or family member sew it for you. Then again, I may be more budget challenged than most!

$40 is not a big difference enough to make me buy the cheaper version. Ikea is my choice.
If the Target one was $150, I'd probably buy it.
But then again, I don't have that much money to spend on a chair. So I'd buy a used but still-in-good-shape chair.

i've been considering both of these chairs recently! i was unreasonably happy to see this poll.

the ikea chair is a little punishing to sit in - i feel like you'd only set guests down in it whom you didn't want to stay for very long. i do love the fabrics though - especially the green and red print. i believe the target chair comes in some other colorways, too, and just eyeballing it i can tell it's marginally more comfortable.

i've seen the ikea chair in person and the slipcover is thinner than a toads hair. it will never hold up to regular wear, let alone a washing. the target chair by comparison has better fabric in general.

that said, on style alone I like the ikea chair.

But the question was which is the better purchase. Target wins.

If I could afford to spend that much on a chair, it would be an Eames.

I've never spent more than $15 on a chair and they were all nicer than either of these. I didn't even spend that much on my sofa.

I don't like either.

If I had to choose, I'd pick the cheaper. Just because it's cheaper.

the removable cover is key for me! not only am i spilling things all the time..but im changing my mind about my decor all the time!! being able to change it would save me money!!

Although I KIND of love the yellow in the Target one, the truth is the relatively neutral colors in the Ikea one will make one less crazy less soon, and if there are other covers available at the outset, I'd go ahead and buy those extra ones when I bought the chair. OK, that's not sounding like a bargain, but altogether it will probably make you be able to enjoy the chair longer.

I like the look of the Ikea chair, but it's too big: it's too deep in the seat for me, so there's no back support.

Teeny weeny stubbly little 29" legs go a long way to explaining my love for undersized mid-century modern furniture.

I really like the look of the Ikea one, but I find the chair uncomfortable to sit on - way too firm.

I am actually considering the Ikea one now but in one of the other fabric print styles. I love the look and found it to be comfortable for me. The target one is too boxy and the lines are not as pretty as the Ikea one for me.

As a tall person I found the Ikea chair to be awkward and uncomfortable in person. While the Ikea chair (to me) says, "hey I bought this at Ikea" (not that that is always a bad thing) I feel like the Target chair doesn't scream that its from Target. Plus, it looks more comfortable.

I don’t think I’d buy either. The last time a bought an upholstered chair from Ikea it smelled strongly of plastic and perm. It stunk up my apartment for three solid weeks. It was awful. I don’t trust either chair not to be stinky.

I have the ikea one (two of them). They are actually pretty comfortable, although I agree the price was a bit high for ikea. I can sit comfortably in them (I'm 5'1"), as can my 6'5" husband.

incidentally, i tried the Ikea one yesterday :-D i found it really comfortable, quite graceful, and small enough to be a good fit in a smaller apartment, too. i do not find either of the chairs to be "budget", though, but rather above what i can afford at the time. (i liked the Ikea one best in a simple cream slip cover, not very fond of floral patters.)

i also cannot really see why it is a problem if a piece of furniture is recognisably Ikea (or recognisably something else than expensive "designer" stuff), to be honest. if you have a problem with that, just do not set foot in the store.

I prefer the Target one, but not in that color. I've been contemplating getting it in the pale blue/tan/cream/robin's egg:
