High and Low: Bergere Chairs

A little while ago we wrote about ways to incorporate Bergere chairs into more modern decor. For those of you looking for your own version of these curvaceous stuffed seats, we've rounded up some high and low options...

It's difficult to find Bergere chairs under $600. Their carved wood frames and extensive upholstery make them more pricey than your average armchair. They're also not as popular as basic modern chairs, so they're harder to find at discount stores. Still, we did find a few options at $600 or below. If you really want a good deal, we also suggest scouring craigslist and thrift stores, where second-hand versions sometimes pop up.

FIRST ROW
1 Slate Bergere Chair, $2,000
2 Chandler Chair, $1,500
3 Mistral Bergere Chair, $1,300
4 Carved Custom Bergere Chair, $900
5 Bleached Linen Chair, $800

SECOND ROW
6 Louisa Bergere Chair, $600
7 Louis XV Bergere Chair, $550
8 Avalon Accent Chair, $350

If someone goes to buy the Ballard chair, you usually get a 15% off link within a couple of days of subscribing to their emails.

Also, there's a site I always check called www.retailmenot.com that you can search for coupons on. I never buy anything online without checking it first.

I am on the hunt for a bergere right now. I like the kind with a detachable cushion for the back though (like the first one you picture). They are not cheap! Even in consignment stores they are rarely under $300-400. And I want to recover in the fabric I choose, so I think $600 is the price I'll end up paying.

I have two authentic 19th C french bergere chairs and I love them. Everyone finds them comfortable, elegant, and a great accent to our more contemporary furnishings. Currently both are upholstered in more traditional fabrics, but I definitely have a hankering to re-do them (yet again!) with bolder modern textiles.

It's totally worth finding one that is structurally sound and solid but in need of refinishing and reupholstery. You'll save oodles by having that work done, and you'll get wonderful, custom chair.

Lucky you-kimg924
