Hans Hopfer's Mah Jong Sofa, designed in the 1970s, seems like the epitome of psychedelic style to us. Designed low to the ground and decorated in colorful patterns, it's the perfect place to crash while listening to old LPs. For inspiration that originates in the era of flower power and continues into our own time, click through the photos above and the links below...

I've been lusting over the Mah Jong for years...
My favorite 70's inspired lounging is the Tufty Time by B&B: http://www.kioskdesign.ca/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tufty.jpg , http://www.paris-sete.com/fotos/portfolio/TUFTY_A_G.jpg
And of course, my original love, the TOGO by Michael Ducaroy: http://www.kontaktmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/togo-enviromental-1-in-orange.jpg (I had this in brilliant white for several years, the most comfortable seating I've ever owned)

I don't recall ever seeing anything like the Mah Jong sofa in the design magazines of the 60's or 70's...
...the 60's were much more formal, and although the 70's certainly moved towards casual - nobody mixed fabrics like that in their conversation pits or sectionals.

The mah jong sofa look super comfy and would be great in a basement. I wouldn't do it for an actual living room, but it looks fun as a lounge space.

jacksonlalonde, I knew you were a kindred soul!
TOGO was my first love, my first lust (the furniture kind, at least!) when I was but 9. Have always owned one since I moved out on my own! (the current set is red)
1973 was a great year!
(bepsf, I remember the Mah Jong from design magazines of the period, but then, I tended to see the French ones in Quèbec -- like Maison Francaise)

I've seen these type of cushions for a few years at Pottery Barn Teen. My daughter likes them. They're on sale. Although they are not patterned like the Mah Jong's. Just sayin'...

I agree with Laura- the mah jong sofa looks very comfy and would be great for a family room.
For the living room I like the togo better:

Another cool option would be a round pit like this one:

Roche bobois have a very nice collection of this style too:

The first photo is very me. We have a few of these lounge pits tucked into different nooks and have found a lot of cool cushions at http://www.karmaliving.net/products.html.
