Ludus Modular Sofa by Patricia Hopfer

We've featured double-duty couches, sleepers, and modular sofas on AT...but here's a new twist: the Ludus Modular Sofa combines a sectional sofa, bed, and library. Designed by Patricia Hopfer and manufactured by German company Mobilia, this sofa packs a lot of functions into one piece...

The "library" component is an MDF shelf that also acts as the backbone and corner piece of the couch, while the cushions fold up/out into a bed or sofa.

A soft-surface "connector" underneath the piece protects the shelves and cushions from the floor and keeps seating from sliding around. For more information on the Ludus Modular Sofa, click here.

In our quick search, we couldn't find any U.S. distribution for the piece. If you're looking for something similar, our first thought would be to construct your own version from low shelving and folding cushions. AT Readers: if you have ideas or suggestions for how-to's or similar pieces in the US, let us know in the comments below!

Oh wow... this is giving me serious DIY ideas.
I can see this being done with those large, chunky floor cushions sold by Urban Outfitters. Uniformly-upholstered though. And just have simple one shelf bookcases on the sides and back as needed. So multi-functional and Japanese.

CB2 has it's own take on this as well:

only problem would be finding room in my surly closets to store what's currently under my bed and getting a chest to store all the bed linens in. otherwise, i think i'm going to go for this! DIY-wise I mean.

oh, just realized - instead of a bookcase as the back of the bed/couch, you could use a hinged top-doored storage unit. at night, raise the door and pull out your stored bedding.

Its very smart..very much like the built in sofa/furniture in FLW houses, except this has more flexibility.

I would love to do this with outdoor cushions from wall to wall in my porch!
