Room & Board: Modern Air Coil Sleeper Sofas

2008-02-27-sleepers.jpg
It may be bedroom month, but not everyone has room for a bed - for those who go the sleeper sofa route, Room and Board has come up with a way to move it into the 21st century. They got rid of the lumpy squashed mattress and replaced it with "air coil" technology - a huge leap up on the comfort scale...

Rather then forcing a skimpy-fied traditional mattress into a sofa, these Room & Board sleepers feature a mattress that is designed especially for the sofa. The air-coil mattress inflates with each use in about a minute (same for deflating in the morning). This means that when it is inflated there is no sacrifice in comfort due to having to accommodate any folding mechanism.

Not inexpensive, but for any of us who have had the pleasure of sleeping in a regular fold-out, it seems worth it, especially if it will be used regularly. The down filled cushions and quality upholstery fabrics make for a comfy seating experience when it is folded up and functioning as a sofa, as well.

I own a 2-year old R&B York sleeper. It's a fine, sturdy sofa but only a so-so bed. I haven't test-driven the new one with the airbed (is it me, or does it stand a little tall?) but I did find out that I can retrofit it as a replacement item for $300 or so.

I don't suppose these are any lighter than conventional models? Because that's the biggest downside to hideabeds -- getting them up to a third-floor walkup.

When purchasing a set of sofas, you should keep the comfort and the latest style in your mind. The best choice would be choosing something cushiony and supportive for your living room. There are so many things in the category of modern furniture which comes combined with a class and elegance.
