Sofa Separation Anxiety

8-24-07sofaseparationanxiet.jpg

We're finally getting a new sofa. It needed to happen. Our old couch is threadbare, with the padding showing through in two spots. Really, we should have gotten a new couch six months ago, but we've been suffering from sofa separation anxiety.

We looked into reupholstering our old sofa...too expensive. We researched DIY reupholstery and eventually realized we would drive ourselves insane trying to re-web the springs and sew new cording. A couple of weeks ago, the in-laws said they would buy us a new sofa as a wedding gift, so we took them up on their generous offer.

We settled on the Case Study Day Bed from Design Within Reach (bought on sale). It's comfortable, works as a bed for overnight guests, and if we ever needed to give it some DIY-reupholstery, it would be a managable task. We're looking forward to welcoming our new sofa into our home, but we can't help but feel some pangs of guilt. We'll miss our old couch.

This is the first sofa that I ever wanted. It was my introduction to mid-century design and catapulted me into the lifestyle. I still love the sofa but my tastes lean more now towards modern design. I secretly lust over this one still.

Wow, this sounds so familiar! I just did the same thing. My old couch was is great condition and I couldn't believe I actually got a little sad when I had to sell it. What's happening to me!

Thanks to my friendly neighborhood DWR I was informed of a floor sample sale and this what we ended up with:

Yes, a bad photograph, but more importantly a Case Study Day Bed!

One of the things I thought I would miss about my old sofa was that it was great to stretch out on and watch tv. This one is just as great because the cushions can be moved around to create a perfect lounger.

I'm just curious as to why you felt the need to say that you bought this sofa on sale? What difference does that make?

I can't speak for Sarahc but I'm always proud to admit I bought something on sale. Especially things that are so expensive. It's kind of exhilarating to have your eye on something that seems out of reach and then after months or weeks or days of looking around you find it for a fraction of the price.

To me, that's more fun then just walking in to a store a plunking down the cash for something that has already been marked up several times then add to that tax and delivery. Yes, I'm happy I got what I wanted but there isn't the same exciting feeling as I get from a "good deal." I'm not talking about haggling over prices either--I never do that. Just talking about getting a mass produced object for less.

oh, and there may be some modesty involved as well.

yes, art. similar to why i was so proud to find the same sofa in excellent shape, USED, on craigslist. it's a good feeling! when buying a large piece of furniture, money can sometimes feel like everything...when really you want everything to be about the quality and style.
