The S Chair, now known simply as the "Panton Chair," was designed in 1960. Made from molded plastic, it was the first cantilevered chair made from a single piece of material. The design is stackable, and it comes in a broad range of colors. The chair is produced by Vitra and sold for around $260 at DWR, Design Public, Zwello, and lots of other stores. There are also a few knock-offs floating around, including Bed, Bath & Beyond's S Chair for $140.

I hate to admit it, but I find this really uncomfortable [beautiful-looking, though]. For more photos of this chair in action, check out Becky's post about it today on the Design Public blog:

visualingual- the church on is fantastic.
I sold my Pantone chairs a few years ago, I am just not into sitting on plastic and grew tired of them.

Great, I'm not the only one who doesn't like these. They are uncomfortable and I don't find them at all interesting. I find them esp uninteresting because they are everywhere.

Forget the Panton chair - what's that light fitting in the first picture? It's amazing!

Favorite look-alike, preferred over the plastic, this woven one:

Those chairs look cool if in the right setting. However, I imagine that they're really difficult to maneuver. As a fairly uncoordinated soul I wouldn't want to have to scoot back in one of those to get up. Does anyone have experience with Panton chairs at a dining table?

i love these chairs, although i haven't ever sat in one, so my opinion is based purely on looks. they look cool as hell. one of these years i'm going to splurge on one.

from a purely visual perspective, the original (high gloss fiberglass version) is one of my favorite chairs....
from an affordability perspective, the DWR modern plastic version is a decent buy. That being said, my husband thinks they're uncomfy, and nixed the idea of getting 8 white ones for our dining set :-(
My opinion regarding its comfort.... I think it's better than virtually every kartel chair I've ever sat on. It's more comfy than the egg chair (which is a horrible beast... shockingly uncomfy). Even the eames rocking chair was awful (felt like I was falling backwards!). We discovered that form has overriden function in most modern design icons. The panton chair does better for comfort than most.
