While it looks like something from the near future, Herman Miller's Embody chair is definitely here, now. The Embody is a beautiful combination of ergonomic sensibilities with Herman Miller style.

While it is already being hailed as the new Aeron, the Embody has its own identity. Debuting yesterday, the Embody isn't as sleek as the Aeron but it's still quite a sight to behold as the back of the chair, with its 56 flexors, resembles a human spine flexing and bending to cradle the body.
Designed by the late Bill Stumpf and Jeff Weber, the Embody was said to have been inspired by a pair of comfortable shoes, of all things. Even though it is meant to promote health and created to provide optimum support, the Embody still manages to look pretty damn cool.
Available in orange, lime green and light blue, the Embody starts at $1,495.

While I'm sure it's very comfy, it seems that the majority of ergonomic office chairs have all the charm of a running shoe. There's just so much happening at once...I can't imagine this looking good in anything but the most modern home.

what a cool chair! Although I agree with Christopher B - wouldn't match in a lot of homes.

I was looking forward to the Embody chair's debut, but now that I've seen it I'm somewhat disappointed with the aesthetic part of the design.
Specifically, the front of the chair is incongruously bland compared to the back.

I am quit happy with my Humanscale chair now about five years old and very understated and comfortable.

This chair scares me.

With all of that engineering, couldn't they squeeze a shiatsu roller mechanism in there too?

This kind of chair is not targeted at homes, but offices. Upscale offices for attorneys, etc., are often stocked with high-end furniture like this. They buy in bulk and get cheaper than retail, and then they write them off as business expenses. Combined, it drives the crazy prices of designer chairs down. All that said, those offices don't buy orange chairs. I assume HM has black/grey/brown models, which sell 96% of their units.

meh. doesn't do a thing for me except make me wonder why they didn't finish it. i'd cover up the skeleton w/the same orange fabric.

Certainly makes a statement..... like "take me to your leader!"

Bill Stumpf was a design genius and unfortunatley wasn't able to finish the chair before his passing. You can tell imediatley it is missing his artful melding of engineering, innovation and design aesthetics like the Ergon, Equa and Aeron Chairs. We will miss him in many ways....

I feel the big three office furniture companies have many of the same design and marketing miscue issues as the big three auto makers. How can the company that gave us the Eames so misunderstand design? This is another chair desperate for attention of its ergonomic wizardry and 'innovation'. I don't want an office chair to do anything other than allow me to concentrate on my work, and look calm and quietly attractive, and well.. rational. Perhaps HM thinks there a a ton of Silicon valley firms eager to outfit techi-looking offices to attract young talent, but I'd worry my employees were going to then take work seriously. Maybe HM think the chair says "I'm here for work", but I can't help but feel it says "My boss thinks I'm amazing". The problem with the Aeron chair is that while its super comfortable it looks a bit of a blob, and is too expensive for most contract projects to afford doing complete offices - $850 . I can't see a chair twice the price and twice as ugly cutting it. My clients are looking for a simple padded office chair that does the job attractively, for $350-$450. If there was the new Eames management chair - just a simple padded chair with easy adjustment and looks great - made with modern plastics the same way as Aeron, Embody et al, I would be filling offices with thousands.

It looks cool, but
Um...
Am I the only one who is scared by the price! $1500 for a chair?

I would have rathered Stumph have been inspired by a pair of 1930's union made Italian leather Cuban-heeled Ferragamos than a pair of far-from-fair-trade assembly-line Nikes.
I'm not scared by the price. It would not matter to me if this chair was $99 - I would never want that cold thing in my office, studio, castle, chalet, country estate, villa or plain-old-home.

It is incredibly comfortable to sit in but UGLY - why on earth didn't they cover the back? Do they think looking at springs is attractive? And why no all black?
I also wonder whether you can re-cover it when the mesh wears out - at a price like this, you want to use it decades, so that's a real consideration.

Sitting in this chair won me over. It really is comfortable and the engineering is quite innovative. People said the Aeron was ugly when it came out and now it's everwhere. I imagine folks will warm up to the Embody as well.

I've been reading review after review and blog entry after blog entry on the Embody chair, but every time I tried to buy one online, I couldn't find a site - even the Wired store that was supposedly selling them. After months of banging my head against the wall, I was psyched to finally see that the Embody is now selling online! It looks like it's only at a few stores...most of the ones that have been selling the Aeron forever. I hear everyone on the design shortcomings, but I had to try it for myself...not sure any chair is worth $1600, but we'll see! :) I ordered mine on

Hi everyone,
Is this available in different colors? I see on this website http://www.embodychair.net/ that it's available in black. Is this correct?
Thanks

I saw a review where the person used the Embody Chair for one week. He concluded with the following:
The Embody does everything you'd expect a chair to do exceptionally well. On top of that, it gives you an experience sort of like lying in a hammock and moves with you to such a degree that you are able to forget it's there - for the most part - and just focus on getting things done. That, in my opinion is its best feature. You can design your own customer version of the chair at http://www.smartfurniture.com/embody . Every chair has flaws, but Embody has few. I don't want to give it back, and that tells me more than any analysis ever could.
