Grid shelves are favorites among AT readers, particularly the DWR Cubits and IKEA Expedit shelf (which appeared in our list of the top 5 cheap furniture basics). Despite their square shape, grid shelves are flexible - they make great room dividers, office workhorses, and nursery storage. Click below for 10 ways we've seen them styled and put to use...

Little P's nursery uses the IKEA Expedit for both basket storage and open shelving.

This colorful Expedit was created by lining the insides of the shelf with paper - a bright, bold backdrop for toy storage.

Bryan's apartment uses the DWR Cubits to divide space while letting light shine through the shelves.

This wall of wine racks was created from cubed shelves stacked on top of one another.

Melissa and Matt's Cubit shelving is split apart to create a single side table at one end of the apartment and stacked storage at the other end.

Emily and Craig's grid shelf is set off with painted walls and color-coded books.

This low shelving grid from Mobileffe divides two rooms in a large loft.

Vitra's Self Shelves incorporate translucent colored panels that help to define an entryway in this room. They also work as record album and magazine storage.

This large shelf, filled with white documents, acts almost as a monolith dividing two rooms.

Nicole and Brandon's Expedit is split up into functional storage using IKEA's smaller storage pieces.

Gorgeous studio!
You know, it's odd? I ADORE Expedit, but I can't quite work out WHY. I suspect addictive drugs in the finish ;) (When I saw it in the showroom, I just went, "WANT." It was $40 more than the Billy we were going to get, but also had the distinct advantage of being a hell of a lot better-looking.)
