CHI Good Questions: Piece Out of Place?

2008-01-22-question.JPGKay sent us an email and photos: "I have been a long reader of your website and thought that the readers might be able to help with rearranging the furniture in my home. The sideboard/piece beside the TV seems to be out of place. Maybe we also have too much furniture in our house or too many different colors. Please help!! "

2008-01-22-question2.JPG Kay, we see what you are talking about - that storage piece next to the TV does look a bit large for the space it is occupying. The height seems to be the major offender here, it just is too tall for the narrow, small area between the wall and the light colored sofa. The fact that the entertainment center is so low slung makes it look especially tall by comparison.

Our suggestion would be to remove it completely, switching the floor lamp in the foreground of the second photo to that corner to illuminate the space and create a cozy reading spot at the end of the sofa. We'd move that (great-looking!) table lamp from the storage piece over to the left side of the tv and shift the tv to the right. Adding the table lamp to the entertainment center would add some visual interest by breaking up the super symmetrical set-up you have going on currently, while the triptych of artwork above will keep things in balance overall.

Any other arrangement suggestions for Kay? Please let her know in the comments below...

I agree about the piece of furniture next to the TV being a bit too high. It also seems like there's a lot of black in the room. For example, I think that if the coffee table in the middle were a bright color (maybe a chartreuse green), it wouldn't feel so heavy. The paintings on the wall make the room look darker too, since they are quite dark and are right above a big swath of black (TV and console). If you had artwork with lighter/brighter colors, I think it would look better.

In place of that piece next to the TV, I would put a tall, leafy green plant in that corner. It would help lighten up the room a bit and the green would compliment your wall color nicely.

Thank you for the comments. What do you all think about the position of the couch in relation to the window and the position of the tv, etc.?

Yes, move the cabinet out. In addition to painting the coffee table, how about switching the couches around? Or if painting is not an option, a bright scarf/table runner and decor?

That and some big plants would help. They always soften the edges.

Try the lighter lamp next to the TV. Could you add some print to the shade? Either in a new shade or perhaps add some trim to it?

Print pillows. Pier 1 had some cool ones on sale last night. Ours had lots turquois and gold pillows. Could be cool.

Being the pedigree tightwad I am, I always check sales. Tons still on. Clearance is my friend.

Just my thoughts.

Yeah, move out the corner piece.

I love the colors, but pick your favorite tone (green? then it would coordinate with the lamp and new paint for the coffee table) and stick with that for the throw and other pillows, maybe pull a lighter version of a color in the pictures. I like the idea to paint the coffee table a limey green. Green plants are good too! A monochrome palate for the accessories will make everything work together without being to complicated to put together.

The original suggestions to move the metal lamp into the corner and the other to put the green lamp on the tv stand is a great idea. Then put the black lamp where the green one is now to mix the lighter and black tones evenly throughout the room to balance. Right now, all the light tones are in front of the light windows.

Does the art trio seem too high to anyone else?

How about some low wicker baskets on the floor with large plants inside? Three across would look really good

Super comments! Would like to hear more ideas.. So, all in all you guys think the couch placement is OK and all I need to do is remove the corner piece and soften the area with some plants and a standard color right? Do you think I have additional space for 2 chairs to the left of the leather couch? What kind of chairs?

If you think it's out of place, then it's out of place. Go with your gut, not ours.

I agree with Orangejuce. Also, the paintings are a little on the lopsided side. Slide them over.

Hey Kay! That's my middle name!!
