Look!: A Chianti Colored Kitchen at Home Depot

20080520venecia1.jpgWhile browsing caulk at Home Depot over the weekend, we ran into this bold kitchen display. Or, we might say, it ran into us with a loud smack.

These jewel-toned cabinets make quite a commanding statement but, as far as kitchens go, red has deep history.

Jump down for stats and to see the nifty way they open up...

20080520venecia2.jpgThe bottom drawers were astoundingly large and deep. What most thrilled us most was the way the top cabinets opened upwards with a bi-fold hinge.

We jotted down a few notes while at the store:

KraftMaid cabinets (Style = Venecia, Color = Chianti)
• "Easy clean matte melamine surfaces"
• $400 per lineal foot

If you're planning a cabinet overhaul, a trip to the design center is probably in order:

Those are straigt out of the 40s. My inlaws have a 19th C house in Tennessee that was remodled in the 40s and the cabinets open like that. They aren't red though. :-)

Nice cabinets -
But matte surfaces aren't shiny...
...and these are clearly very shiny.

I visited a loft one day on a loft tour in Atlanta that had shiny, bright red cabinets. The kitchen opened up into the dining room, and for a sideboard they had Sears Craftsmen tools chests to hold all their silverware, plates and napkins. I always thought it was neat idea.

Ikea, half the price - same or better quality.

I agree with LBhirise. Ikea had it before Home Depot, and it is better and cheaper.

LBhirise and plain Jane are right on target: IKEA's kitchens are terrific, less expensive and impressive as can be in terms of ingenuity and quality. Home Depot is a Johnny-come-lately in the kitchen department, too.
