New from Blu Dot: SHILF Modular Shelving System

bludot012809.JPGBrand new, the Blu Dot SHILF is very nice looking; a simple flexible design that also seems super sturdy. We're thinking that pretty much sums up what most of us are looking for in a shelving system, but as these things tend to go, that is not always easy to find. This powder-coated metal system looks more elegant than your average bookshelf, with no sacrifice in usability or longevity. More pics and pricing below:

Sure, these cost a (quite) a bit more that a wall full of Billy bookshelves, but we are thinking that these will be around for the duration. The combination of simple styling, use of hard-wearing finish and material and the option of being able to rearrange the components as your needs (or rooms) change makes these a long term investment. According to the press release, no tools or hardware are needed to reconfigure the pieces, making rearrangements a snap.

Has anyone bought this shelving or seen it in person? I've been looking for a modular solution and this may just be it! I'd love to hear some reviews...

This could have been done so much better. Everything bludot makes looks cheap.

I'm finding it very hard to believe that whoever came up with the name "shilf" is blissfully unaware of recent slang acronyms...

what do you mean "seems super-sturdy"? by seeing it, reading about it, reading the load capacity, what? in the pic on top the only even reasonably heavy loads are placed directly above the thickest supports. That doesn't speak to being super-study.

Personally I can't understand why Blu Dot costs what it does, especially when it seems to be the same powder coated metal you can get at IKEA (and I do actually like the material) for much less. It's not that it's super-expensive, but it always feels about a third (at least) more than it should be for something that may or may not be just one step above th lowest rung of IKEA.
