The Self Shelf

102606selfshelf.jpgWe found this seemingly invisible shelf over at Popgadget. By attaching the "shelf" (it's that bottom look-alike book) to the wall with a hidden bracket, your books will look elevated in a whole new way. Buyers have a choice of khaki, red, or turquoise spines, but what we'd really like is a choice of book title and author...does it really have to say "S.E.L.F. Shelf" on there?!

This intriguing product is available for $29.95 from Firebox, with a 9 lb. weight capacity.

I know that Umbra has something very similar to these; minus the "large" book. I found the link, and attached it below. Best of all, it's only $11.00!!

i wonder if the umbra shelf includes the book shown or if you use your own book as the base.

Rebecca: The bottom book is the bracket, hence the translated title meaning "this is not a book". Brilliant as only the francophones will figure that one out!
Wonder how many books you can stack on the bracketed book? Many of my books are thick and heavy. Is there a weight limit, or can I pile sky-high? (:

Oops, I don't know much about the Umbra one!

No the umbra one is just a metal plate bracket. it goes between a book's pages and its back cover. there's a little lip to hold the back cover from flapping down.

The Container Store sells the Umbra shelf for $10 and I saw the "SELF shelf" for sale in there a few months back.

No reason you couldn't recover the fake book with a better dust jacket.

I Know the same brands also have bigger shelves. They are meant for cookbooks/recipebooks, but you can of course put every book on there you like.

Something very similar to this was in ReadyMade magazine a few issues back... here's the link to the page on the site that explains it.
