apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#8 - Becky and Chris's Nice to Come Home To

Name: Becky and Chris
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Size & Type: 450 sq. ft. one bedroom

Favorite resource: "Toronto is a great city for design finds. My spots are Queen West Antiques & Kensington Market for vintage / Plan B & Caban (now defunct) for new."

Pitch: "Moving from a 3 bedroom house in Florida to a 460 square foot apartment in Toronto wasn't always easy. But on a modest budget, we've managed to transform our rental into a cosy, fun, and animal friendly environment."

2007-04-18-bedroom.jpg

Pitch Cont'd:"We've created spaces for living, a functioning art studio, and even had room left over for our 2 chihuahuas and 3 house rabbits. I think this space is a reflection of our personalities, lifestyle, and simply - it's just nice to come home to."

2007-04-19-kitchen.jpg

Your favorite element: "The artwork is definitely my favourite element of the space. I'm beyond lucky that my boyfriend is an artist. Our walls have always acted as a rotating gallery."

My fave, as well. I'd love to see some wider shots, though, as I have a tough time gauging the scale of the place from the high up photos. That said, just gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. Love the lightness and whimsy.

Love it! My favorite Midwest entry so far. I love the white and pale walls with the bursts of bold color art and accessoriesl Nice job!!

I'm inspired! Finally I get to see a space that's not too white, not too colorful, and not too bare! This is just right!
I think what makes this work (for me anyway) is that it appears well thought out. Again, the pictures make each room look separate and it's hard to see the whole layout of the room itself until you view the floorplan.
Would love to see more pictures!

Oh my gosh, do you and your boyfriend really sleep on that tiny little bed! It looks good though!

My reaction was the same as MCNicole's!! That bed looks so small for 2, but the apartment looks great.

WOW, what a delightful home. I want to see everything, especially the house bunnies. This has the same joyous energy of Jane and Darkos entry in the last contest and makes me wish I could go there. Love that girl and bunny painting. Very stylish and personal.

You guys do a great job with the little space provided. It's nice to see everyone esteeming my brother's artwork and your interior design work, Becky. You guys are a talented dyad. And having vigo in the first photo is a nice touch! Hope you guys win.

Love Nikki

This is one of my favorites. It's like you created a pristine pad inside of a snowbank. I love how you incorporated animals without being too cutesy or using carcasses.

Your apt is great. I'd love to see more of the art above the sofa. The white panton chair looks great with the sofa.

Just wanted to comment on the bed, since some people were saying it's too small.... I think it's cozy and if you're in love a small bed is a plus not a minus.... E.g. unless you guys have got sleep problems... snoring etc. Or are large people.

The curtain in the living room would look better imo if it went over the wall where the two whitish pictures are, better continuity... But that's just my opinion.

This apt is one of my favorites so far.

I like the artwork above the bed with the dog?/rabbit?/creature-thing (alien?).
The rest of the place is nice too.
You ladies are so lucky. You can hang chandeliers with glass teardrop prisms. Guys can't do that.

Love it, one of my favorites so far. Beautiful use of white AND color. Is it a Mibo lampshade in the first pic? I like. And as others said, the Panton looks like a comfortable yet beautiful chair here, not a showpiece. The art is perfect for the space, or rather the other way around. But if I had to share that tiny bed with someone the relationship would not last a week. Wow.

Tony, guys can and should hang chandeliers with prisms. I'm personally not a chandelier fan, but I am female so you are welcome to take over my lifetime chandelier quota. Please hang a chandelier in every room of your house with my blessings.

Great apartment! I'd love to see how your pets live in the space, too... I have a house bunny myself and somehow end up with an endless amount of hay all over my hardwood! Great color palette!

Very nice! Great use of color to make the place seem larger than the 450 sq ft it is, yet it still looks very cozy. I especially love the artwork and furniture. Bellissima!

Thanks for all of your comments!! We would love to be able to show some more pics of our space.
To answer some questions:

The bed is a full. It does look pretty tiny in the pics, but don't worry - we're not crammed into a twin bed at night. :)

Chris's website is being overhauled right now, but his art can be viewed at > www.flickr.com/photos/chrismusina
He also just opened up an Etsy shop with prints > www.chrismusina.etsy.com

The colour in the living room is BM Whispering Spring. I'll have to dig up the kitchen colour and post it later.

Thanks again!

I love the art. Is that a portrait of Becky and one of the bunnies over the bed? Extra points for owning Chihuahuas too: great dogs. I usually like a color explosion, but I am forced to admit that the white elements in the bedroom really make the colors pop. Amazing apartment.
