apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Midwest Semi-Finalist #2: Becky and Chris's Nice to Come Home To

Name: Becky and Chris
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Size & Type: 450 sq. ft. one bedroom

Original Entry: Click Here

1. Who was your favorite entry and why?

The space that really stood out to us was Joseph's Cozy Brooklyn DIY (even though it was just an extra). I love his custom designed bookshelves & desk, and am completely envious of his flooring. He's taken a layout that most would have trouble with, and designed a functional (and gorgeous) space.

What's your next improvement?

The next thing that we'll be adding to our apartment is a pair of custom stools. We wanted some extra seating options in the living room, and stools were the perfect solution - as they can also function as side tables, or somewhere to put your feet up.

Yay!!! This is just my favorite space of the bunch! Loved seeing more of the photos. And I love that painting with the mountain climber and the abominable snowman!!!!

Overall I like this, it has some nice elements, but seriously, the rejects we saw from the Northeast beat the stuffing out of some of the finalist apartments from other regions. Instead of having finalists by region it should have been the best entries - period - in the finals.

This isn't finalist caliber to me.

I love the artwork, but I'm having trouble visualizing how all of these spaces fit together more than any of the other finalists.

I did vote this one instafinalist, though.

Congrats, Becky and Chris!

I have to say I am extremely pleased with the choices for Semi-finalists. So many real, personable, and do-able homes have been chosen, this one included! Congrats, AT!

The artwork really brings character and personality to this space. After the frist submission, I was looking forward to seeing these additional paintings.

All the white boxes and containers make for a very simple, and cohesive way to store things. It makes the space seem less cluttered. This entry definitely deserves to be a finalist.

Congratulations on making it to the finals! Your entry was one of my favorites. I love your artwork. I found it ironic that I kept voting finalist for places that don't really need anything. Your place is perfect as is. Nonetheless, I hope you win a a prize and that you post your decision. Good luck!

There were actually 4 entries I thought would make it to the finals and yours was one of them! Congrats! The more pictures I see of this awesome space the more I like it!

In your original entry I fell in love with your living room - to die for! Truly inspirational! That's why I voted insta-finalist for you guys!

I like all the artwork a lot. It's intense and playful. The newspaper-dispenser-hatch thing in your living room (with a Drive Like Jehu poster, even?) Hotness.

This set of photos makes me like this space a lot more than the original entry (which felt way too girly to me and was taken from strange angles). You bring a lot of different elements together in a way that works, and your taste feels very of-the-moment without looking like you spent a tonne of cash. Good job.

Sydney: "Instead of having finalists by region it should have been the best entries - period - in the finals."

I totally agree with you. Seems wrong to reject so many great NY apartments that have FAR higher scores than the 'finalists' of the other regions. - Although present entry above would probably qualify, many many of the others would not.

If AT won't use the same standards across the board and stop insuring that each region is represented in the finals, then at least they should allow more finalists for the Northeast region.

I like the bunnies and the owl. It looks like the owl is going to have the bunnies for dinner. That or it looks like the bunnies are floating.

Congrats on being a finalist.

I like your little sideboard/credenza.

i like everything, and i think this place looks liveable and not hotel-like. you can tell they have "stuff" but it's not cluttered. it looks nice and neat, and easy to keep that way, especially considering there are two humans and several pets living in this small space.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys & gals!
I believe the flooring in the bathroom is original to the building, which is from the 1920's - I think it was originally a hotel. It's not in the best shape, but we're renters - so redoing the floor was not an option.
That's Pooper, our rabbit (who thinks he's a dog), in one of the shots.
The desk in the office is from I to the kea.

I agree that a lot of rejected Northeast entries were better than many from the other areas, and I've been disappointed with some of the semi-finalist choices.

However, not this one. This is a great mix of elements, with punches of glamour (shower curtain, chandelier) and a strong shot of whimsy from all the original art. Like it a lot--definitely a strong contender, IMO.

Your place is PERFECTO in every way possible...I think that anyone who criticizes what you've done design wise doesn't have an understanding of what "real" living is...yeah sure, alot of these other places are wonderful, however, they OWN their place (not rent) or their place just looks "un-lived" in and cold...I think the most important element in interior design is warmth and the feeling of being welcome...especially being that you and Chris live in an animal friendly atmosphere...your place ROCKS!!!...and YES YES YES, the artwork is ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS...Chris Musina is an AMAZING artist with an abundance of talent...I think your place should win!...it gets my vote...

This place hits that sweet spot between "beautiful boutique hotel" and "lived-in happy space". The style and creativity in this place reflect the amazing personalities of the peeps that call it home. This apartment is simply inspiring and absolutely deserves the title of "smallest coolest". Best of luck guys!!!

I like the way you took a normal apartment layout and made it work better for your lifestyle (by putting the bed in the living room & using the bedroom for an office/art studio). This place seems like it would be totally livable. You two deserve to be a finalist!

Very nice! I agree it looks stylish but not pretentious. Looking at these photos I do not get that 'Look how modern and art-fab WE are' feeling.Your home seems clean, bright, interesting and uncluttered but still approachable and warm. I like the evident sense of humor. I am inspired. Thanks!
