Midwest #14: Annie's Logan Square Home

Name: Annie
Location: Chicago

Rent/Own: Rent

What is the advantage of SMALL? Small forces editing. And editing, I find, is the most difficult yet most satisfying work. I like to see a conversation emerge between pieces in a room as each form, each texture, each wash or pool of light creates a dynamic play - a small space especially encourages this.

What's your favorite resource for your home?

I have many sources but no single favorite -- elements come from Pier 1, Ikea, thrift stores, my mom's house's overflow, Target; anywhere I find a piece I like.

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?

My pair of red velvet arm chairs purchased at the Salvation Army.

Very, very nice. The colour suits my eye perfectly - not too much, not too little. Just the right amount of "stuff" to make it feel personal and lived in.

The subtle painted design on the bedroom wall is beautiful! At first I thought it was a shadow. Love the low-contrast colors there.

three pictures of the living room furniture? Overall, it seems cozy and warm (which I love love love), but this was one of the few homes I wish I could have seen more of.

I really don't like the kitchen. The red wall on one side? I hated it! Uck! What an eyesore.

Love it! This is the first entry that has compelled me to comment. Seems very comfortable and beautiful to live in! I love the moldings, doors and built-ins!

I love how warm and calm this place is! Not super cool, but superbly done. My one comment would be regarding the odd vibration between the circular table top with the squared off base.

Digging the red chairs. I also like the red in the kitchen area. You made some really nice color choices for the walls too. Well done!

love it! may i ask the paint color in your living room? we have wood trim everywhere as well, and that yellow looks like a great complement.

i also really like the red in the kitchen. however, i was bothered by the clash between the kitchen red and the living room red in the one picture (especially since they are similar in brightness while being rather different in hue). maybe it's less jarring in person.

I think this space is super cool for sure... especially the warm tones and lack of clutter - Annie walks her talk.

Where did you find the fab coffee table?

i love color but find the usage in here all wrong. red and yellow are my least favorite combo on earth, the red wall in the kitchen is weird, and the pale colors in the bedroom, while cool, are all wrong with the rest of the bright, saturated palate.

annie here---to answer some questions:

the paint color in the living room is called "bagel" by behr. it changes gorgeously throughout the day (my windows face south).

the coffee table: i used to work at a stone company and they were throwing the marble top out so i snagged it and then i had my extremely generous and skilled friend weld me the table base to go with.

the red chest of drawers in the bedroom: my mother bought that in san francisco in 1968.

the "painting" in the living room: it's actually a piece of weathered plywood that i stole from a construction site.

thanks for all the comments, everyone!

Love those windows. Your place has a lot of character. That weathered plywood is such a cool find and even cooler that you saw "art" upon finding it!

the rest of the place is just ok, but i was really drawn to the bedroom. i love the mix of colors and what you have done in there. is that purple or pink walls and red furniture piece and blue on the bed? whatever it is it looks great. nice.

I'm interested in the fact that several people are commenting on the built-ins - bookcases, moldings, doors, etc. That, to me, while lovely, has very little to do with the person living there - unless she built the place, she just got lucky in finding it.

Though there are other pieces I like (the red chest of drawers, like everyone else), the built-ins don't count into my opinion of the place overall for that reason.

Wow.
really worth a second look.
Interesting style meet-up going on here.
And it all works.

Maybe lower the black) silk wall hanging to the same height (or lower) of the other upper parallel lines around it.
