apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Midwest #21: Carla's Grand Ave. Home

Name: Carla
Location: St. Paul, MN
Size: 650 sf
Rent/Own: Rent

What is the advantage of SMALL? I live in St. Paul MN, so the best thing is the wonderful cozy days in the winter where you can curl up and read a book, or watch a movie. Oh, and the location for small apartments is usually better than their larger counterparts.... there's a reason that they try to fit so many people in one place.

What's your favorite resource for your home?

I'm not too picky about where I buy things, I think that by finding things at both the cheapest and most expensive places, the most important thing is that I fall in love with something.

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?

I really like the being creative in a small space. Working with hand-me-down and thrift store furniture has really given me an amazing opportunity to work on almost every piece and expand my DIY knowledge.

Gorgeous!
Love the bathroom.
The circular plant stand is genius for a space saving nightstand.

Very lovely.

It really bothers me how high the computer monitor is, but the fact that it's a Mac makes up for it :) Everything else: A ! Very inspiring

This normally wouldn't be my style at, but the way it reminds me of both my grandmother's cozy old split level and our family cottage in Maine has made me fall in love!

I voted cool because while I enjoy looking at your photos, there aren't many shots showing rooms and dealing with living in a small space. I am excluding the kitchen area when I say this.
Everything looks beautiful. Was there a reason for choosing all white accents? The lemons in the kitchen add a lot of visual balance to your space. I think replacing some of the white flowers with red would have added more depth.
I love your bath tub. Your space has a lot of victorian charm. I would love to see your space-saving adaptations though.

I think the oval mirror in the bathroom is just dreamy; I like the way it looks with the curve of the end of the tub.

Anyone wanting to do "Romantic" as their interior theme should use this place for inspiration. Even though it's not my personal look I voted "Super Cool" because it's been done so well.

Cozy and lovely and I thought the stacked white & black tables in the kitchen were a great idea I might have to steal from you.

It feels so much larger than the square footage. Romantic and cozy are definitely right. You have a very lovely bathroom!

One question though, do you move your computer monitor down to use it? It's up awfully high for ergonomics I think.

Bathroom is Super Cool. It's hard to judge the rest of the apartment based on these photos. But I love many of the decorative accents and it looks lovely and cozy.

It's been said. Romantic, cozy, and very feminine. I, for one, love the white accents with just the tiniest bits of color. And the stacked Lack tables are so much cooler and less expensive than a boring old shelf. Good job. My one criticism is that I wanted to see more, to linger for a while longer.

This looks like what you would dream of finding as a summer vacation rental in France. It goes to show that a layered look can be pulled off in a small space!

I was intrigued by the placement of a mirror in front of the tub. The mirror certainly wasn't for use while dressing, because you'd have to step into the tub to see yourself. Never occurred to me to look at myself taking a bath.

Basket of towels, pale blue drinking glass, and the candle add a spa feel to the room.

I love the coffee table and chess set with the comfy chair. There's a lot of nice use of small space and it looks very good. I voted "super cool" but this is yet another "home office" set up where it's clear the computer sees little use. Not only is it too high, but the two chairs placed in front of it mean one person can't sit comfortably centered in front of the display.

It has an effortless and genuine atmosphere. Some of the other distinctly "feminine" entries are not as easy to like, because they look overdone or items look too meticulously chosen to convey a certain taste or theme, and yet still kind of look thrown together in a frenzy, or juxtaposed with odd modern items to prove a sharp wit or playful side or that they are not stuck in the past or too sweetly girly. This place, by contrast, looks as if it has been edited without drama, and added pieces with good fortune and a lot of patience for just the right thing, and knowing just where to put them without having too much. Very, very cool.

And great use of the stacked Lack tables as shelves in the kitchen.

I love the partially made bed, it looks so comfy and welcoming.

It looks comfortable over all.

I put up a lot of mirrors to reflect light, even if I can't see myself in them. It really lights up a room.

This is a set of nicely-staged vignetes - or this person doesn't cook (a lamp w/ ivory silk shade next to the stove???)

I was surprised to see that the floorplan is of a fairly large apartment with numerous rooms - Didn't get a feel for that in the photos.

OOOOOOOO.

What homey, relaxed, lived in beauty! The round mirror by the claw foot looking tub is gorgeous and sensual looking. The poster bed with downy comforters looks warm and inviting. What a beautiful change, from the sparse looking modern apartments that I am seeing so much of in this contest.

It's so nice to see someone's apartment from the metro - I'm in Minneapolis and missed the entry by a week, due to moving into the new place April 1st, and not being quite settled in time.

You have beautiful taste, and it looks as is if you really LIVE in your space! Great job, and good luck!!

Oh! I also wanted to compliment you for the pictures - you've really showcased how you LIVE in your small space, and didn't just take pictures of your STUFF.

There seems to be a lot of the latter with this contest.

So cute, but I can't get over the monitor. Why? Why is it up there? there's no way it can be used that way, but if it's not meant to be used without moving it to the table, why are the keyboard and mouse out? Sorry, a little ocd, but I really can't figure it out. Otherwise I love this entry!

I appreciate the comments about the personal touches and lived-in quality, but overall it appeared to me to be pretty scattered and odd.

Was there a large mirror over the tub? Was the monitor part of a makeshift office crammed on a dining room table? Was that the edge of a papasan chair in the bedroom?

I think I would like it more if 1/4 of the contents were removed to open up more space. Nice effort! I give you points for not including a cat!

Definitely more inviting than so many of the cold and modern entries on AT. I think I really like this place though the pics are more vignettes and only give me an impressionistic feeling for this space.

A number of the pieces in this apartment appear to be overly large or precariously placed. I feel nervous with some of the arrangements - like things would fall on me if I was standing there. Perhaps it's just a trick of the photography.
