apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Midwest #27: Curtis & Alex's '39 Bungalow

Name: Curtis & Alex
Location: Madison, WI
Size: 728 sf
Rent/Own: Own

What is the advantage of SMALL? I like it because it is cute and cozy, the street that we live on is also kind of small and hidden. A house this size is easier to wrap your mind around, easier to clean, easier to furnish, probably better for the environment, cheaper to maintain. We bought this place over other places that were larger because it felt good to be in, that's what's important.

What's your favorite resource for your home?

Ikea, clearly, but I try to find thrift store bargains as well. Also a lot of online resources.

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?

My favorite element is the backporch/back yard. They are both sort of private and in the summer it seems to add a little room to an otherwise small dwelling small house

I love your space and you have some great furniture (and a damn cute dog!). The only thing that I personally couldn't deal with is a red room - gives me major anxiety!

Love the cats and the dog!

Adored the blue living room with the orange chair. And the red bedroom! Fantastic. Great use of color.

This looks like a really warm and comfortable place to live, and the boston only adds to that. Mine is next to me, munching his stuffed piglet.

The red bedroom - I was a little scared when I did it. When I was painting it I kept having to leave the room so me eyes could adjust. However, now that it's done it's great. At night when the room is low lit, it just appears warm and rich. The only time it looks garish is when the overhead lights are on. This pic came out kind of bright - it doesn't really seem like that when you are in the room. The whole thing is definitely a work in progress. Thanks for the props and interest.

PS: dog is ernie

An entry from my home town! I love it!

I wonder how it look with the woodwork painted white?

Check out Southwest's entry #27 Josh's, very similar to your entry.

Kudos for the non-white woodwork. It ties the rooms together and coordinates colours that otherwise might not play well together. Also appropriate for the bungalow.

The only reason I didn't go for Super Cool was because of the bathroom. It's so vibrant and alive in the rest of the house, then you get to the bathroom and it's almost like it's in another house. It may still be in the plans or whatever, which would be cool, but for now it was a color buzz-kill :(

The peaked archway is wonderful though, you're so lucky!

This is such a lovely apartment. Very nicely done.

And this entry should get lots of extra points for showing the bathroom. Most entrants flat-out refuse to show their bathrooms.

I made a vow during this contest not to be swayed by the appearance of cute little creatures in the entries. So, my Supercool had nothing to do with the menangerie.

I kept looking at the colors and thinking, that shouldn't work so well. But it does.

This is lovely! Your color choices are great, and I love the modern style that's warm rather than frigid and hospital-ish. Go Madison!

What is the name/brand of the light blue paint you used in the living room? I have a couch the colour of that chair, and I love how it looks against the blue... Thanks

With the spare furniture, the bright colors are terrific, and the vibe continues throughout the apartment. Great job. Those black shelves, though. They make me nervous. Why so high?

The bathroom colors are actually MORE saturated than the pic turned out. Kind of a blue - lavender. Really, though, we haven't done much to the bathroom. We're saving for a major renovation there.

The black shelves may appear higher than they are because of the angle that I took this one at. I was sitting down on the floor.

The color of the office with the orange chair is actually kind of a 50's light greenish-blue (celadon?) That was the only wall that we left when we moved in. It was probably last painted in the 50's. The daylight bouncing off of snow and filtering through the cellular shades probably cools the color down some.

The bathroom has a 80's light fixture. It is screaming update me. The furniture looks like warehouse (IKEA) stockroom buys. Maybe keep working with it and the look will come together. Overall, quite impressive.

You really should enter the colors contest when it comes around.

And the dog is precious.
