Hooray for the Midwest Finalists!
Thanks to everyone who joined us last night for the Small Cool party - it was great to be able to celebrate the wrap up of our annual contest with all of you. We were so happy to meet three of our Midwest finalists -

...who were there for the big announcement by Maxwell (posts coming soon!).
A few familiar faces from the new AT Presents book were also in attendance - thanks to Melissa, Matt, Dave, Dana, Marilyn, Peter and Jessica!
We'd like to thank Jan Parr, our Chicago judge, for all the deliberations and for joining us last night.

hey, congrats, wish I made the party. Have a question, hoping to visit Chicago for a weekend, fares are great right now. But where to stay that is accessible and not a budget breaker. My daughter and I plan to meet in Chicago from Pgh and Phila to explore Chicago on foot. Public transit is a need, and safety always a concern. Thanks for any info.

Dar, I don't know how you feel about hostels, but I've stayed in hostels across Chicago, and for my purposes--just a place to sleep and keep my stuff safe, they've been awesome (http://www.hihostels.com/affiliates/hiusa060034.php?house=060034). Otherwise, Priceline.com is often awesome for unbeatable hotel rates.

Dar-- when I first moved to Chicago I stayed at the Lincoln Park hostel for two weeks in a private room. I'm pretty sure they offer two single bed rooms. It's a huge place, definitely not fancy, but cheap, in a safe neighborhood, and close to the el. Plus, hostels have kitchens so you can save money by cooking your own food.
KatieD-- I haven't been, but the butterfly haven at the nature museum has been highly recommended to me. It's also in Lincoln Park, not far from the zoo.
