In terms of what constitutes "small" for this contest:

I think a lot of people are frustrated because many of these entries consist of a single person living in 600-800 square feet. That's a ton of space for one. But that same space, occupied by a family of four, could very well be considered "small". Maybe next year's rule could take the number of residents into consideration? For example:

One person: up to 500 square feet
Two people: up to 600 square feet
Three people: up to 700 square feet
Four or more: up to 800 square feet

Just a thought.

The photo equipment is just silly looking to me. Take the stuff down when your through with your shoot and pack it away... if you're gonna leave them out at least it could have been some pink alien bees (monolights) to liven up the place - and add a splash of color - which this place sorta needs I think...

I live in 77 square meters (that's almost 850 sf) 3 people and a dog and I can tell you it is not a lot of space, but I agree that for 1 person it is huge.

Agree on the square footage thing. When I lived alone in 600 square feet I had all the room in the world. Now I live with my husband and child in 850 square feet and I have to be inventive and constantly culling to keep things under control.

As I said in a previous post, I feel like this contest is losing its way. Where are the 250 sq. ft. apartments? I've seen 1 entry like that on the east coast. The people on here now, seem not to have had to respond to any spacial challenges. Their apartments look nice, but not much beyond that. There's nothing particularly creative in how they used the space they were given. What is "Small" in comparison to? A classic six on Lenox Hill?

Have to agree with all of the complaints about the number of apartments in the contest this year with square footage over 700 feet; we've ended up with a lot of really blah larger entries where no creativity or ingenuity were necessary to create a livable, comfortable abode. I well remember the finalists of the first year of this contest; they were tiny and highly creative. While I disliked the colors and furnishings of The S.S. Waverly, it is one of the few entries this year that really shows the true spirit of the contest.

Let's go back to the original rules; this contest has really lost its direction.

I echo the above thoughts on the contest. I live in a studio, which I consider a small space. Singletons with a separate bedroom have nothing to show me as far as designing a small space. Sigh.
