Small Cool 2009: Andrew's Vintage Character
Little Division #28

thumbs up

Who Lives There: Andrew
Location: Oak Park, Illinois
Size: 790 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? I love the elegant, painted moldings. They have seen better days but have a lot of character. I painted them tonally to blend with the walls, but also used a semi gloss to make them distinct.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? Finding furniture that is the correct scale is often the major issue. By focusing on vintage, retro, and European styles you can achieve the correct scale for an older & smaller space.

Very nice, and no so nice to see a style other than mcm, even if I do like it in doses. Very calm and warm.
Is the angel art yours (as in did you paint it?), because it is beautiful and thought-provoking.

I meant "so nice", not "no so nice" :P

I would like to give a thumbs up but don't feel I can on the basis of only one room.

The first shot of the living room is amazing, but I have to agree with the others that I cannot give you a "thumbs up" since you only show us bits and pieces of one room when there are five rooms in the apartment!

There is an absolutely FLAWLESS combination of pieces/eras/styles going on here. I'm okay with not seeing your toilet since I'm guessing your landlord picked it out. Bra-vo.

Your home has great potential at the first picture. But instead of showing us the space, you opt for pictures of favorite pieces in your living room. I can't give you "a thumbs" up based on that.

You have some beautiful pieces and they're well arranged (the Icharus painting is SO gorgeous), but because I can't get a sense of the whole apartment I'm going to have to withhold my thumbs up.

I wish you'd included more pictures of the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, etc., because I'm sure they're just as lovely!

Thanks so much for the positive comments. A few answers/responses.

1. The walls are Blue Stream by Benjamin Moore
2. Sofa is teak & mid century, unknown maker, French. From Toomey Gallery in Oak Park.
3. Angel painting is by Jonathan Franklin

4. In regards to the comments of it being only one room, pictures #3 & 5 are actually of the dining room as well. I totally agree that it should be more comprehensive. In my defense my apartment was actually broken into last week and ransacked. They took several things including my digital camera. These are old photos from a month or so ago and there wasn't time to take any new ones of the other spaces as I had planned... so apologies! Hope that explains things a bit.
