Small Cool 2009: Avallant's Classic Elements
Little Division #08

thumbs up

Who Lives There: Avallant and Alex
Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Size: 750 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? Wow, that's a tough one to decide! I guess I have to say that I really love the existing classic elements of our place, like the original hardwood floors, moldings and fixtures. It is really important for Alex and I to have a place with really good bones, because we are renters we cannot usually change anything once we get there (although we painted the back office, shh dont tell!)

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? osh, Alex and I looked for a pair of matching night tables FOREVER (we each had our own when we moved in) with no luck. Everything we found was either too large, too tall, or some such thing. We sort of gave up looking for awhile. Then Alex was inspired by the clearance section at IKEA and we decided to try a different approach - we installed floating shelves with wall-mounted lamps instead. We actually love them now, and they really open up the bedroom by giving us more floor space. But I think that next to that, our biggest challenge is agreeing on things for the apartment. We have pretty different tastes, but I think that actually makes our place more interesting in the end!

I'd love to see pics of the kitchen and bathroom. This place looks very clean and stylish.

I love the marching deer in the first shot. The miniature details seem to be what give this place its character.

I've lived in 750 square feet before. Why do all these places look so much larger than my place did?!

I love the deer too, and the little ducks(I think they are ducks) above the door frame. The matching school chairs at the desk, and the BRIGHT yellow tea cup on the bedside table.

haha, for the record, my name is allison, not avallant! LilyC, I know what you mean! Ive lived in other places about this size, but the open layout of this particular place (living/dining room) really make it feel more spacious! Thanks for the other kind comments!

I like your media stand. Where did you get it, and how wide is it?

I gave a thumbs up just for the nighstands alone. I have the same issue, not enough floor space by my bed (doggie bed next to me). Floating shelves have always been at the top of my list, I really love the loating lights too, even more space...

The Mediastand is an Ikea Tobo to which I added some ventilation fans in the back. It's 67"Wx20"Dx27"H. I also had to add some extra legs to the bottom middle because we've put a little too much weight on it.
