Small Cool 2009: Erineliz's Ever-Evolving Home
Tiny Division #20

thumbs up

Who Lives There: Erineliz
Location: Chicago, Illinois
Size: 450 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? I am the first tenant in this gut-rehab unit so I enjoy new appliances, bath fixtures, and wood floor along with some vintage charm. It is the perfect setting for my eclectic collection of mid-century, antique, and contemporary furniture and accessories.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? The furniture layout possibilities are quite limited due to the placement of room divisions and windows. I love the amount of light the many windows provide, but they also allow for only one furniture arrangement. I like to regularly re-arrange rooms and the pieces have been forced to remain static for four years. I have dealt with this challenge by continually re-curating artwork and table top accessories, so even though the map of the rooms remains the same, the feel, colors, and style are ever-evolving.

ErinEliz, is that the Room & Board Andre sofa? Looks great. How is it holding up? Considering one myself.

I have the same string light (by Patrick Townsend) and LOVE it. It's quirky and casts the most beautiful glow. Lovely, home!

Great use of color! And the barcode looks better than it has any right to.

Serene and well-edited, but with a sense of humor too (that barcode!) Thumbs up from me.

you should try putting the couch in the middle of the room facing the windows. i had my couch in front of the windows like that and doorways on either side of the middle room too--moving the couch really helped avoid a big space in the middle of the room and the "movie theater syndrome." Plus during spring i can see lots of flowers outside.

i agree with with adetoth--you have a LOT of plants on the floor

I love what you've done with your place and I love your art - did you create some or all of it yourself? That barcode looks like a mural - I've seen barcodes as wall deco before and I've always felt they looked a bit creepy, but this one is great because of the handwritten look of the multi-coloured numbers. I also love how you've used fairy lights, you've managed to avoid it looking too girly-girly and I thought that was impossible with more than one string of fairy lights!

Erineliz,

You have talent! You should be a professional designer to help out people like me : ) Love the barcode - it looks cutting edge but cute. Great job.

I bought some of those same lights you have under the counter in the kitchen. What a great way to use them! Thanks for the inspiration. I really love your unique art work.

I love that it looks like you used those hardware-store numerals on your barcode art (painted fun colors, of course!).

Sofa: Yes, it is the Andre. I love the firm seat and fairly straight back and the style is timeless. If you like a squishy sofa, this is probably not for you.

Paint color: I have no idea, the entire building is painted that color.

Coffee table: Thrift shop find. I had a piece of glass cut to fit inside the tray to create a smooth and polished top surface.

Bar code: The numbers are indeed painted house or mail box numerals

Art: I created all the art except the series of 3 panels with the photo of the couple holding hands. Those are from an old Kate Spade fragrance ad campaign.
