Small Cool 2009: Matt's Little Home, Big Tech
Little Division #32

thumbs up

Who Lives There: Matt, his girlfriend and their cat
Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Size: 644 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? Our wireless system. Even though we have a small space, we have a lot of tech. By having a wireless system, both of us can simultaneously browse the internet, share music libraries and use the same printer. It also enables us to play music from our computers through the surround sound system in the living room.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? My girlfriend and I moved in together last year in August. We had a bunch of furniture between the two of us so we didn't have to buy much. I hacked a dinning room table I had to make it half the size so it would fit in our kitchen. We also needed two seperate work spaces, so we put my desk with iMac in the bedroom and her desk with laptop in the living area. We tried to only keep what we needed and buy what was neccessary (such as the green rug in the living room to tie things together). Resources that I enjoy and would recommend to others are IKEA, CB2, West Elm and Craigslist. Most of our furniture is from those four places.

I feel like curtains could do a lot to warm your space up. So many of your cool colors and design elements are close to the floor.

An oversized headboard would really heighten the design impact of your bedroom.

I'm such a huge black and white fan until I always play close attention to the way the two are balanced. You've done an excellent job....especially with solid white walls that make it hard to give a lot of depth to a room. Thumbs up to you!

Shout out to MPLS! Love the Gold Medal Flour print above your computer...would love to know where I could find one (or a Grain Belt print, if you happen to know that too).

@clampers That's an Adam Turman print (http://adamturman.com). He has lots of great Minneapolis and biking themed prints.

Your off to a great start with your space, but I think it needs a bit more character. Agree that curtains will help a lot to add more texture and take some time to shop for nice bedding - it will add a more romantic look to the bedroom (even if it is in B&W).

Nice job! Love the crisp look of the living room as well as the healthy flow of light from the blinds.

Very chic - yet cozy. I love how you tied it all together with splashes of color and the uncluttered, functional space. Very cool.

I think it's completely average and lacks creativity. I'm not sure how it got into the running in the first place.

That's an Adam Turman print above the laptop! He's great! I just ordered two prints from him this month.

I rent the apartment, so unfortunately I can't paint the walls or add window treatments.
