Small Cool 2009: Scott's Elegant Carriage House
Tiny Division #42

thumbs up

Who Lives There: Scott
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Size: 475 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? My favorite element of my small space is the ceiling height. My ceilings are 22 feet high, and have very interesting architectural elements to them (sky light, great moldings and interesting angles). In the small space it feels much larger because of the height of ceiling; I never feel "boxed" in. I also love that my space was used as a real working Carriage House in the 1920's. I enjoy the history and knowing that there were Horses and Carriages at one time in the place that I now live.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? As my space is a rental, I am not able to paint or choose my own permanent decor. Knowing that, I have to choose every piece of furniture or objet very carefully. I have to be insanely in love with everything I bring through my door (right down to paper towels and tooth paste-not a lot of storage for things I don’t love). In doing that my furnishings pull focus away from my plain white walls and tan carpet to showcase what I find to be truly beautiful. I also have an open floor plan bedroom, living room, kitchen and dining room which can be a large problem in its self. I then had to choose furniture that looks good to the adjoining rooms and relates to one another in a great dialogue. Being a true Aries, we are big believers in texture in our environment and respond to that more than colors. So I have used lots of texture to unify all of my little spaces together to create a space that I truly enjoy.

Scott - I love this. As an Aries, too, I looked at the photo and went "Ahhhhh".

Being a former Cols resident, I'm wondering if this is in the German Village area? Used to live down there and the challenges of historically built homes, especially as rentals, can be tough. Hats off to your choices!

This is by far my favorite! It is refreshing to see this aesthetic featured amongst all the Mid-Century and modern spaces. Your place is just what this contest needed to spice things up. The architechtural details are amazing, obviously, but the textures you mixed together is alomst genius. I love it! Thanks for sharing this.

Either way, it's a lovely and warm home.

Love your use of the word dialogue, but even more so, that you actualized that statement in your choices of decor. I can actually hear the fresh conversation in my mind as your antique pieces give mentoring advice to nouveau sofa. Bravo Bravo.

I also live in a one room, 500SF flat. I know the design challenges, but love that you took the route of "maximalist" with the editing of a passionate collector.

Great job! Trés Trés Chic

Oh my God, your place is gorgeous! I LOVE everything you've done here. It's so elegant and bright and sophisticated but warm and light. Great "editing" and great choices of pieces...it really works well together and when I read in the blurb that it was all 'rental white and tan carpets' I actually had to go back and double-check because I just didn't get that impression. Thumbs up!

Thanks so much for the nice comments and the nice thumbs-up!! The Pheasant's name is Eli. I love all things from nature so when I saw him, I knew I had to have him fly and nest into my home. The Console table behind the sofa and coffee table are my own design. Found great pieces of wood that have been chewed up by bugs and weathered for years at my local Architectural Salvage yard, and ended up designing tables that fit what I wanted/needed exactly. Thanks again for visiting my space that I love so much. So thrilled that others find it interesting as well.

I love this, too. When I see pictures of homes using bright paint & accessories or painfully placed "arty" furniture, I sometimes cringe. I do appreciate originality, but sometimes it's not so original ofter all.

But, when I think of the kind of space I want to come home to every night after work when I'm tired, this is exactly the kind of space that comes to mind. It is so calming & peaceful. The light is wonderful. The selection of furnishings and accessories is thoughful, and nothing looks like it's been done for effect.

It's a very pleasing home.

Thanks for all the nice comments! No items are photo shopped….I won’t even pretend to be that technical. Candle sticks are cast iron (a material I am passionate about) with tree bark pillar candles. They have great weight and I like how important they look on that table. I actually watered all plants tonight. A finishing touch I do with all my plants is to cover the soil with moss. Inexpensive moss can be found and any garden supply store and it goes a long way. Soil is not that attractive and the moss adds more green to the plant and looks very polished and helps retain moisture. I also have started enjoying terrariums. (There is one on the coffee table) The tall glass sides of the container create an environment great for the small tender plants. Plus the plants look amazing under glass. Again, covering the soil with moss for that final touch. Thanks again for the nice comments, I am so flattered.

I have to say I am totally amazed at how clean and neat the space looks despite the heavy furniture and quite a bit of juxtapositions that you have going on. It looks like the product of a very mature taste, with very precise choices. Not my style at all and despite that I really like it. It's very challenging to create a clean, organized place with this kind of furniture. Great job. The console behind the sofa is a very, very beautiful object... where did you get it?

I am the person who took the photos for Scott and I can assure you, the only "photoshopping" that was done to the photos was adjusting color and contrast. All items in the photos are exactly how they were at the time the photos were taken, noting added or retouched. Since there are multiple photos of different angles of a majority of the items in the room (candlesticks, planter, etc), I'm not sure how anyone could come to the conclusion they were photoshopped. I'll take the accusation as a compliment and so should Scott.

I am totally missing the "personal" in this home. It's fantastic and gorgeous for a magazine spread, but past that, it leaves me feeling hollow. Even mag images have a pair of beach sandals or an open book tossed in. However overstaged, I can appreciate the worn bluish chest and the fact that no pillows were chopped. Beautifully done, now let's take our shoes off and kick back.

Scott, hey man, this is Ryan - the guy who could not decide on a sofa. It's been a while since we talked. I love your place. You should come over and do my place!

1. Absolutely beautiful.

2. Nice to see a place with carpeting. I'm stuck with carpets and many places featured have lovely hardwoods.

3. Why no picture of the kitchen? Would like to see one, if available. Link?

Hey Scott,
I really love your house. It's really beautiful, but I have a couple of questions.

1. In your drawing of the floor plan I don't see any closets, but in the pictures there are several doors. Is there a floor plan that I could see? Or can you tell me what is behind those doors?

2. I would love to see a picture of your kitchen. How does it fit into your overall decor?
