Small Cool 2009: Shutterbug678's True Representation
Tiny Division #53

thumbs up

Who Lives There: Shutterbug678 and her boyfriend
Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Size: 550 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? My favorite element of our home is that it really represents who we are. The large headphone painting dominating the wall was painted by my boyfriend and it completely changed the feel of our home. The colors are a little bit him and a little bit me. They are very soothing and allow us to relax after a hard days work and spend quality time together in our beautiful home.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? Because we do rent, there are multiple things we can not change and that drive us crazy! We would love to put in moldings, repaint the ceilings and update the kitchen with new cabinets, appliances and countertops. My boyfriend would love to sand down the floors and refinish them.

We work with what we are given. A fresh coat of paint does wonders, and custom artwork really makes our space feel like "our space" We have bought carpet remnants for some areas and brought in lamps for softer lighting. Basically anything that we can do we have done, and as far as the other ideas we come up with and can't put into action...well, we'll save those for our next home. :)

My absolute biggest frustration however is no dogs allowed. It's killing me not to have a fuzzy little 4-legged family member!!!

Congratulations for adding personality into the spaces despite your renting limitations. My favorite detail is the touch of red/orange in the kitchen. Nice work all around!

My boyfriend Spencer painted it. It took him a full month to paint. Isn't it absolutely fantastic? :)

Lovely! The bedroom looks so inviting. Where'd you get your shower curtain. I want one!

The headboard was made using 3 pegboard panels, thin strips of foam and upholstery fabric. We mainly just used spray adhesive and since we used the pegboard we didn't have to nail through it. We just put the nails on the wall and hung the panels like a picture frame on the wall. :)
The shower curtain I actually found at Linens & Things! It was exactly what I was looking for, and I thought i'd have to pay a heavy price at anthropologie or Crate & Barrell. Lucky me, I even had a 50% off coupon!

Love the painting! Music is a very big part of my life too, and I can see something like that hanging in my house too. Awesome job!

I'd like to see a photo of the stereo system of anyone who has that large a painting of the AKG K701 headphones.

its not the stereo system, it's the recording studio. But he says "good man!" to someone who can recognize them without any branding!

Beautiful! The color pallet and the layout are simply stunning. Where did you get the cabinet above the toilet? The one in my current house has one but it's built in, and I'd love to get one for my next apartment!
