Small Cool 2009: Whatevertom's Entertaining Space
Little Division #13

thumbs up

Who Lives There: Whatevertom
Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Size: 750 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? My apartment has two large window banks that bring a lot of light into the space. I like how it creates interesting shadows and highlights throughout the day.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? There were a number of challenges I had when furnishing my place. I wanted a lot of seating, but did not want to have a space crammed full with furniture. I found the coffee table with the tuck-in stools, and a convertible daybed/couch that gave me lots of seating and a place for overnight guests. I have a large home entertainment system that uses tall thin flat speakers and a roll down screen that blends into the wall and hides the equipment. I was able to do much of the work myself, found furniture on Craigslist and in neighbors throw away, and just cleaned up what was already here.

That coffee table setup is pretty cool.

Although it's not perfect, this is one of the most interesting and inspiring submissions i've seen!

Rather than relying on the intrinsic nature of the building, a certain retailer and/or Designer objects, this place seems to be all about the ingenuity and vision of the inhabitant.

Great solutions for entertaining in a small space, and I love the colors and the mix of styles.

I love the picture of the little girl or boy with the static electricity hairdo and the elephants on the wall in the bedroom. Both are very original elements.

It's not my taste but it's done very well. I'm impressed.

I got the "WOW" factor when I clicked from picture one to picture two. Nice.

Really like the Avedon print. And shameless loudness.

Love the dining/kitchen area... And the entertaining set up is a great use of space. I'm not fond of the patterns or colors, not sure which, used in the entertaining space though and I think it is because I am so fond of the dining space and the two don't tie together at all. Perhaps if they were better seperated it wouldn't bother my eye so, or if you drew a couple of elements from each room into the other... But overall, very impressive and one of the most interesting/exciting entries so far!

Total personality. It's so not what I would pick, which makes it all the more amazing and great that it made me not only smile but laugh. I love that it's so unabashedly exuberant. The table/chair idea rocks.
And your floor plan shot is so cute.
