We thought what Maxwell noted upon launching the NY survey was very interesting: "We always find that most people suspect that others live more richly than themselves, but the truth is somewhat more modest".
Thoughts? Details to add? Comment away...
$665 - 685 after utilities in logan square. not rehabbed, but has hardwood floors, and 10 ft ceilings. gotta love chicago rent prices.
$825 for a one-bedrom in southern Andersonville/northern Uptown (SoFo?).
Mortgage of $865 plus assessment of $450 totals $1315/month for my small (less than 700SF) 1-bedroom condo in Streeterville. I think I am living pretty cheaply considering the neighborhood. Got the place for a steal and did some renovation before moving in last year.
$750 for my 2 bedroom and $50 more for the private parking out back....I have almost 950 sq feet with 11 foot ceilings....
$1200 for a 3 bedroom 1200 sq. ft. apartment in Edgewater.
$900 for a 550 sq. foot one bedroom in East Lakeview. I love my apartment and neighborhood so it's worth it :)
I have a NYC bargain, a 500'studio. in a 1930's well kept large development, for less than $800 in maintenance.
Of course, I have lived there for years.
I am soooooo lucky.
$685 heat incl. 1br in logan square (avondale) - not sure the square footage but the LR is 13x17 and my bedroom is large enough that i don't have to have the bed in the corner. ;)
unfortunately with the condos moving in, prices like this won't last long.
place i moved out of in june was a 3br for $1150 heat incl.
rebecca - where is your place, and is it a 1br or a studio???
on the contrary to what maxwell thinks, i call bullshit. friends in brooklyn were paying $1600/mo for a 1br in boerum hill (sp?)...
$1125 for a large one bedroom near Old Town/Clark&Division.
$755 for a 550' alcove studio in Buena Park. I just moved in last week. I love the space and the neighborhood, but I wish I'd held out for hardwood floors.
Fantastic, thanks!
I pay $700 (including heat and water) for a large studio in a gorgeous neighbhorhood in Andersonville. Hardwood floors, actual kitchen, dining room, walk-in closet, little foyer area, a front and a back door...in a studio! I couldn't possibly love it any more. :)
jen - it's a one bedroom 2 blocks north and east of the logan sq stop. about 750 sf, i think. i am also fearing all the developers coming in now!
Not in Chicago, but thought would share anyway. My rent is $670 for an 800 sq. ft. one-bedroom in Madison, WI. All utilities are included.
850 for my MASSIVE new and rehabbed 1200sf in North Center. Landlords let me modify the apt any way I choose..."just take it off the rent"
New stove: "just take it off the rent"
Paint for walls: "just take it off the rent"
New tile for bath/kitchen: "just take it off the rent"
The best part... I love my neighbors, and the FREE parking EVERYWHERE, at ANY time!!!!
About $1350.00 for mortgage and assessments on a 520 sq ft loft in the Loop.
I got in at the beginning (2002), it would be closer to $1700.00 now.
Julian you have the best landlords EVER!!!!
Tell me about it...
My heart nearly broke when I heard that they want to put the building on the market. After speaking with them they told me that, get this: right before they close (if they sell) they'll give me a new 2 year lease at my current fixed rent!!!
Talk about nice people!
Oh my lord!!! Seriously, the best landlords EVER!!!!!
We're in Rockford (1-1.5 hrs from downtown) and our mortgage payment (including all property taxes and homeowners insurance) is $620/month. Not bad for a cute 1800 sq. ft. bungalow - hardwood floors and all!
i'm in toronto - and we pay $1800 CAN for a 3-bedroom, with all utilities included, even a laundry room, and we're right downtown. but, the place is old and not very pretty. then again, i'm working on that.
I pay $860 for a small 1 bedroom, ht inclueded, in Ravenswood with a dishwasher and the privilege of calling my landlord more the 3-5 times to get repairs done at my apartment b/c my repairs "are not a high priority". (I am a little bitter right now)
My boyfriend and I split $1300/month for a 2 bedroom, 2000 sq. feet 2 floor apartment in Wicker Park. Love it!
$1100 (heat incl) for a 1350 sq ft in Logan Square on the square. Two bdrm, vintage, lots of light.Wish it had hardwood, but carpeting throughout except vinyl tile in kitchen (small ceramic in bath) but hellacious vinyl tile floor in dining room. Bedrooms are huge, can fit a double AND a twin with room for 2 dressers and tons of kids toys in my daughters' room (they share obviously).
Got my fingers in two pies--own a very cute totally restored c.1929 condo with new kitchen, 1 bed-1 bath (650sq ft) on a very quiet street in Lincoln Park 4 blks from the lake ($980 mortage/prop tax + $250 assessments) and I rent a lovely totally restored c.1908 1 bed-1 bath (850 sq ft) apt on the Upper West Side of NYC for $1295 (waaay subsidized). Both places have hardwood floors, 9'+ ceilings, tons of light... Most definitely the best of both worlds.
950 for 1400 SF +/- in Edgewater, former three bedroom, sun room, funky and huge kitchen with new appliances, usual perks, free heat/laundry and use of charming backyard.
$2400 (mortgage and assessments) for a 3 bed, 3 bath, in Boystown. Rehabbed, 9' ceilings, hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, granite countertops, balcony, patio, duplexed, CENTRAL AIR. Not cheap, but we live with my mother-in-law and need as much space as possible!

Julian, be careful. If your building is sold and the new owners want to convert to condos, you won't want to stay during construction.
I was in a 1 bedroom apt in Ravenswood from 2002-2005, it was about 850 sq ft, heat included, and was completely rehabbed. It had hardwood floors, a new kitchen, formal dining room, big closet in living room with french doors (used to be a murphy bed in there), totally sweet huge vintage tub and pedestal sink...gawd I miss it! I paid $700/month, street parking was plentiful and there were 2 brown line stops within 2 blocks north or south.
Moved in w/my boyfriend and we have a 950 sq ft condo in Lakeview, pay $1500 mortgage +$120 in monthly assessments, +$95/month for a storage unit due to no onsite storage and a severe lack of closets and square footage for 2 people. Oh, and my car is in my parents' garage in Old Irving Park because it was hit twice on the street here within 3 months of moving in...I miss Ravenswood!!
