Kids?

2006-09-06-silhouettes.jpgKids Design Month has begun and we hope to find good design for the young people in our lives.

Some of us live with kids all the time, some of us live with kids part-time, some of us are in grown-up only zones.

We'd like to get an idea of how many children are part of the AT:Chicago world.

Let us know...any kids living at home, part-time or all of the time?

I agree that even though I'm child-free, I don't mind in the least reading about cute baby design (heck, I read every last word of the fireplace post and it's not like I have or am considering getting one of those). That said, it'd be nice if AT in general could try to balance out its posts on monthly themes a bit more with general, non-themed posts. I'd prefer to see the kids/pets/gardening/whatever posts as icing on the standard cake, rather than the cake itself.

Janel -- way to go on the wording of this survey! Hopefully we can avoid any sort of raging debate like one the over at AT NY!

I think AT is ignoring the fact that it's audience is made up maily of young, single, hipsters - not mom's and dad's.

This is going to be a long month.

J,
Wrong on all accounts.

Wow. I'm beginning to think a lot of New Yorkers need to work on their reading comprehension! (and maybe take a Valium or something, while they're at it...)

While I assume a pretty large portion, though certainly not all, of AT readers are childfree, I think it's safe to say we're perfectly fine with entertaining posts about children and the stuff to go along with them. However, I'm with someone in NYC who suggested a kid *week*...a month is a little long for just about everything!

Lori - wrong!? Look at the poll results!

I sincerely hope there are married hipsters with kids out there -- someone has to produce the next generation of reasonably interesting college students to entertain me.

(Just passing through to admire the well-designed poll.)

Wende, all the hipsters with kids seem to live in Williamsburg in New York. And the way their babies are decked out, you may not have wait til they are college students to be entertained. :)
In fact, all of NYC seems to be in the throes of a baby frenzy. Except seemingly AT, of course!

(I'm just passing through, too)

A,
I am. Not everyone who answered is young, single or a hipster (which until recently was a derogatory remark). Many of us are in our 40s, married and not the least bit concerned with appearing hip. I just don't want to be generalized.

That said, I'm looking forward to some good design ideas for the wee ones.

i'd like to point out that this is a DESIGN website...design in all its many facets. i'm always happy to hear about designed solutions to any given situation, including solutions that involved chidlren and their playthings or pets and their necessities. there's always something new to learn.

define "adult." i'm 25 and my boyfriend is 33, and i'm not sure either of us would be considered an adult...

I am "child-free by choice" or whatever the ATNY approved verbiage was...I probably won't be too involved in the various discussions this month, but I am hoping to pick up some good ideas for some various baby-related gifts that I need to get before the end of the year.

As a single (aging) hipster, I take great pride in giving awesome gifts!

Just another shout out for hip (or I would prefer stylish or even cool) parents who read this blog. My wife and I care about modern design and art and music and culture in general, so catering to the kiddies is a positive for us, and I am one Mod daddy of 3 little boys.
