Habits often change (but sometimes old habits just won't die) when you go from living solo to co-habitating. We're wondering, in all honesty (and whether or not you live alone), about your bathroom door habits. Our bedroom door survey results showed that most of you sleep with the bedroom door open, which surprised us. So how about the bathroom? Any surprises there? Take our bathroom door survey below:

it's also my cat's bathroom (his box is in the sink cabinet) so i have to keep the door open.
but guests close the door when using it.

The master bath door is always open. The guest bath door is always closed.

My loo door is always closed when I'm not in there (it's super-cold because I need to keep the window open for around six months until the water-logged ceiling dries out enough for the insurance to fix it) but open when I'm inside (I live alone and the room's TINY). :)

Bathroom door is open when in use and when not in use, unless company is over, and then it's closed when in use.

Abhor the practice some couples have of sharing utterly everything, including toilet use. Makes me shudder!

How about slightly ajar. So my dog can poke his nose through and get in but then I close it.

I stopped closing the door when I lived alone for 7 years. When I moved in with and then married my boyfriend, I kept it open. We do close the door when company is over, but I've had a couple close calls where I'm either not thinking that people are over or when I'm at someone else's house. We've never had more than 1 bathroom anywhere we've lived, so sometimes you both do have to be in there at the same time. Oh, and now the dog, he hates to be left out.

Open if I can't convince my toddler to follow me in fast enuff. Closed when I can get him to come in with me, so I can contain him. (:

The guest bathroom, aka the kids bathroom is usually closed for safety reasons. The master bath varies.

who wants to see the bathroom, whether in use or not? And I think it's common decency to allow the other person some privacy, even if you've been together for years. When the door is closed and the premises are occupied, we'll only enter if it's absolutely necessary and only after knocking & asking permission to enter.

i know some friends of my parents that simply don't even have a door on their bathroom, they put up a curtain when they have people over, but still..
i don't care if my wife is in their while i shower, but for anything else, i like my privacy.

Mine has to be open most of the time for the cat litter box, but we do shut it when we're using it.

I keep the door ajar, and since I'm alone, it's open even when I'm in there, especially when I'm showering. Also, my dog likes to build a napping nest out of the bathmat while I'm away at work, so it's open for her, too.

I live alone... so I leave the door open because - why not.
Especially for showering... the room is so tiny that if the door is closed the walls start sweating. Recently a friend was over while I showered... I actually asked if she minded, and explained that the room is too small to stay closed, so I showered with the door cracked open.
Of course when company is over otherwise... closed for business purposes. What's funny is, the bathroom door sticks and only opens if you turn the knob to the right. Since I hardly ever even close the door... I forget to warn guests. It's funny to listen to them struggle.

#1 - always open
#2 - CLOSED
I grew up in a house of 4 women and no men. My mom and I never stopped a conversation just because someone wandered into the bathroom. Then I lived alone with a cat who could open doors. It was no stretch for me to leave the door open around someone who knew me even more intimately than my family. But I draw the line at dookie.

Used to be open all the time, but now that we have a toddler fascinated with the toilet, we keep it closed all the time. Hopefully the love of the toilet pays off when it comes time for potty training.

when, i have guests or living a/ anyone, it's closed & LOCKED. i'm taking no chances! i also don't like anyone to talk. it's just weird to me. but i live w/ a cat who HATES closed doors. whenever someone comes to my house & uses the bathroom, my cat goes nuts & bangs on the door. so, i leave doors open (except for the closet).

what emilyandharry said: always open unless in use while anyone else is in the apartment.

Open when I'm home alone because my cat has to follow me in the bathroom (and will scratch at the door until I let her in), but closed when my husband is there. Some things should always remain private, even though my mom and I had a very open-door relationship with the bathroom.

Mine was always open...until I found my 15 month old daughter splashing in the toilet. Gross. Now we mostly definitely keep it closed. Tightly.

Well, when you only have one bathroom and someone has to go, you know, big deal. Still, number 2 should always remain a solitary activity.

Mine is always cracked open for the feline, so I answered "closed".

Don't we all. Don't we all.
Open, unless there's company. Because my cat just absolutely positively has to join me every time I take a crap. It's like she thinks I can't manage it alone.
What is up with that? Maybe cats figure their junk stinks so bad they're somehow the experts on the dump, and come to offer their assistance to the lowly primate.

I live alone, so unless company is over, it's almost always open. When I used to live with someone, we did have our privacy though.

sunspot, you've totally made me laugh!
I live alone w/ no pets, but I still close the door. Mostly. When I visit my brother, his dog pretty much stays away, even though he'd like to come in and grab some wash cloths and swing them around. He saves that activity for when no one's watching.

When alone in the house = always open
When husband in the house = open when using for No.1, closed when using for No.2, otherwise open
When guests are over = closed when in use

I had a cat who would just use the hallway if the box in the bathroom wasn't accessible. It wasn't really her fault. She had medical conditions and she just couldn't wait sometimes. She's since passed away but I'm still in the habit of leaving the door open, unless there is company over.
My new kitten runs into the bathroom when I go. She'll hop into the box while I'm on the john. Even if she doesn't go, she'll scratch around in it. I guess she believes in group potty time.
